Removing 1950s cast concrete fireplaces ....

The below fireplace needs to go. From investigation it is a cast concrete base clad in tiles.

I’m guessing back in the 50 and 60s these were purchased as kits buy house builders.

Any tips for removal? Is it likely to be fixed or just dabbed on?

But make sure it is not holding the house up.

Mum and Dad are in an early 60s house. They had to alter their refurbishment plans when it was realised (by Dad and I not the idiot builder they employed) that removing the flue for the oil boiler that was originally installed would probably compromise the roof structure. They could have got round it but they decided the small amount of space gained was not worth the extra money and disruption.

    Removing fireplace

There’s normally 2 metal strips on either side set into the wall with screws remove the screws and set about the fireplace with the crow bar.
    Good luck

Snap! Looks to me an iconic central feature. Build the room around it 🙂

Yes, keep it. Even retile it in modern colours? And if you can safely remove the old ones keep them for possible retrofit if fashions come back around.

I always think of the history with these fireplaces. Of the people who have sat in front of it over the years and the stories it could tell (if fireplaces could talk that is...which, of course, they can't...)

Make sure you protect the floor and tape up doors into the room as the dust gets everywhere. Good luck with the job.

In that case get the sledge hammer out and enjoy yourself. A great way of letting off some steam.

That’s exactly what I did when removing one from my lounge before it was refurbished. The screws had actually corroded and with a little pressure from a crow bar it come down within seconds. That hardest part was lifting it out the house into the skip even with help from two other people.

I found the base was sat directly on top of the timber floor joists.

Thanks for the input, they came off easy.

Revealed a redundant back boiler in one which was right pain to remove.

    Bloody heavy.

Thank god for that. No, it wasn't a lovely feature (unless anyone else has one, in which case of course it was)!

    You've not got the plaster?

You're gonna have to put the fireplace back, mate.
