Get a crow bar behind it. It shouild come out fairly easily.

But make sure it is not holding the house up.
Mum and Dad are in an early 60s house. They had to alter their refurbishment plans when it was realised (by Dad and I not the idiot builder they employed) that removing the flue for the oil boiler that was originally installed would probably compromise the roof structure. They could have got round it but they decided the small amount of space gained was not worth the extra money and disruption.
There’s normally 2 metal strips on either side set into the wall with screws remove the screws and set about the fireplace with the crow bar.
Good luck
Get it fixed that’s a lovely feature, tiles to fix them can be found in salvage yards

Yes, keep it. Even retile it in modern colours? And if you can safely remove the old ones keep them for possible retrofit if fashions come back around.

Get it in the skip, it's dreadful.
Make sure you protect the floor and tape up doors into the room as the dust gets everywhere. Good luck with the job.
In that case get the sledge hammer out and enjoy yourself. A great way of letting off some steam.
That’s exactly what I did when removing one from my lounge before it was refurbished. The screws had actually corroded and with a little pressure from a crow bar it come down within seconds. That hardest part was lifting it out the house into the skip even with help from two other people.
I found the base was sat directly on top of the timber floor joists.
This should do the trick...

I’m attacking it on Monday. Will report back.
It looks the entrance to a desert temple. Indiana Jones and the Fireplace of Doom!
I have a VERY similar one in our new place. I love it OH hates it, ours is a bit bigger and in better condition right enough.
Burns a lovely coal fire in the winter.

I had to have a back boiler removed from the fireplace when fitting gas heating. 3 hrs with a mini kango. FML

Wall also removed so in major refit mode.
Plaster shortage is going to hold me up.
You've not got the plaster?
You're gonna have to put the fireplace back, mate.
