Thread: COVID walks

    COVID walks

I got fired in February before COVID was a thing. Fast forward two weeks, virus came in and luckily for us rules were not as draconian as anywhere else - shopping malls were closed only on weekends, food stores are open, restaurants have to provide 2m between guests, some businesses closed, some worked from home, but no restrictions when you are outside. I mean - 2m distance between people is not a real restriction, normally we keep bigger distance :))

Anyways, as soon as I understood that I may not land a new job in near future I decided that I might as well do something useful - drop some weight, and I started to walk every day. at first 3-4km, then 8, then 10 and when I walked 12km several days in the row I, for unknown reason, decided that I might as well start running.

On most of days I made photos and I want to share some of them.

Some fantastic images Normund. If nothing we have nothing else but improved fitness to show for this enforced slow down, then it will be time well spent

Whereabouts in Latvia are you based? I only know Riga and it’s a city I’m keen to return to when the world returns to normal. I do enjoy spending time in the Baltic States. Plenty of coastline, lakes and forests to enjoy, though not so many mountains.

I live in Riga, but most weekends we are in the countryside - a lot to explore and country is quite small. Give me a shout when you are here.

Stunning pictures, thanks for posting! Out of interest, have you managed to shave off any weight?

I get to goal #1 easy - 10 kilos in 6 weeks IIRC with less eating and 1-1.5h daily walks. The next one - get another 5 kilos down - two weeks and not a budge yet :)

    Fantastic photos, I'm quite jealous!!
Seems that everyone and their dog (pun intended) is getting out for a walk round here, and all power to them. I've been up and down trails and footpaths that I'd either never seen or forgotten since I was a child in the last few weeks. I even spent an hour or so walking from my house to my shop in the town centre the other day right up a hidden footpath between a stream and the railway line - lovely and peaceful, especially with hardly any trains going.
I really ought to walk more, its enjoyable and healthy.
Obviously it's not pleasing everyone... If I hear one more dog walker moan about the influx of walkers due to lockdown I swear I will strangle them to death with their choke-chain. They think they own the footpaths and seem to begrudge people who cannot exercise, socialise or otherwise leave the house a few minutes fresh air.

Some superb photos there that make the area look stunning. An excellent use of your new free time.

Have you thought about approaching the Latvia Tourist Board? They'll need photographers once all this madness eases.

Thank you, I will do that. A small GTG in Riga would suit me just fine. Meanwhile, do update your post with more pictures of your beautiful homeland.

I'm now convinced a trip to Latvia post lockdown is required. Great images.

What's the story with the tree in image 8, beavers?

    Amazing photos

It speaks a lot to your resilience that you’ve changed something potentially negative into something positive - well done 👍🏼

    Covid fitness

    OP,
Sad to hear about your job loss, I really hope that something comes along for you soon, but well done for turning this adversity into such a positive experience.
Thanks very much for sharing your experiences and beautiful setting phots.
I've never been to Latvia, but would like to in the future.
Since lockdown, I too have spent longer periods simply walking and enjoying the countryside, mainly with Ted, my Lab.
Just yesterday I walked with an Ex-RAF friend walking the Peddars way in Suffolk/Norfolk.
We started at 05.05 at Knettishall Heath and finished at Castle Acre with a crafty well earned pint at the Ostrich Pub just before 16.00. We completed just a smidgen under 21 miles.
The setting and open skies was beautiful and the walk was so enjoyable, I recommend it to anybody as the walk is quite flat and easy to negotiate and follow, the signing is excellent.
    Keep up the running!

    Andy
