Broadband Speeds Advice Please

I'm testing my Broadband speeds ( Virgin Fibre 100 Mbps package ) by running Ookla speed test with my PC plugged directly into the router via Ethernet cable.
I'm testing back to back and I'm getting different speeds every time - from 15 mbps to 30 mbps then to 70 mbps is this normal ?

When I then test the connection unplugged by WIFI the speeds drop way down to below 10 mbps - from the same position just 2m from the router.

Thanks in advance

Try these two for comparison:

Is the router plugged into the master socket and are there any extensions running off it

Have you tried plugging into the master test socket remove faceplate of the master socket

Have you update the wireless driver?

Unless you pay for an uncontended service, or guaranteed minimum speed, you’ll be sharing network access with a number of folks in the street.
Speeds can fluctuate dependant on traffic. If they are all home smashing box-sets on Netflix you may be affected.

Wireless driver is updated but Router is plugged into an extension cable
I will see if makes difference plugged into the main socket
What will removing the socket face plate do ?

Get it off the extension point

Have your router not on the floor if possible

Ethernet into smart tv if possible

Also look how many devices you have “attached virtually” to your network
Many will be running apps in the background even if not being used but in and connected
This will drag your speed

Isn’t Virgin fibre connected via its own coax cable? Certainly mine is so nothing to do with the telephone master socket.

To the OP, connect to the router using your browser then on the status page check and post the stats, there should be upstream and downstream stats that will show signal strength and errors.

eddie1 you’ll be pleased to know...

Looks like your Virgin Worries might be soon over (had massive issues when I was with them as well).

They have told my neighbours that they are currently fixing speed tonight from 5pm so try again tomorrow?

Good luck!

Thanks but my broadband
Issues with Virgin go back awhile.
There promises to fix the issue are ringing a bit hollow at this point

Virgin has been struggling with server load, presumably related to large numbers working from home.

My speeds have been okay but there have been intermittent drop out across the whole network in the last week or so. You can check known issues on the website.

So you’re equipment is probably fine....but, I’m surprised you don’t get your stated speed. I consistently get 215 (of 200mb) when it’s quiet.

Have you got a superhub3? Are the devices you’re checking on usually quick? Are you broadcasting a 2.4 or 5Ghz signal?

There could be interference, try restarting the router or logging into the control panel (put this in the browser 192.168.0.1 Pw is on the base) to change the broadcast channel, reset, check settings etc.

These are my downstream stats so you should have more than 4 downstream channels
