    Record Vise spares-any ideas?

Either my Google-fu is weak or I might be out of luck! I have an old Record vise which has some soft plastic jaws which need replacing. Can't find any anywhere, so wondered if anyone might have any ideas?

    Any help appreciated.

    It's like this one...

Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.

I found some on RS components, they were fibre not plastic but I imagine they are for the same soft application? Alternatively it’s something a 3D printer would be ideal for making.
    Cheers..

Can’t tell how big (or small) it is. I bought some fibre- faces for a 6” record vise (vice?) from Machine Mart. As a last resort perhaps you could get those and cut the fibre layer off the metal backing then trim to fit. It would involve fannying around but it might solve the problem.

Depending on how many vices you have - if that one is the only one I'd buy some metal jaws and then a set of magnetic plastic jaws and probably a set of fibre ones too. These just clip on when you need them. You then have the ability to grip anything you want to work on using only one vice.

One plastic one on, fibre in the background.

    Try

They are brilliant and you can buy small area sheets from them.

Difficult to tell whether your jaws are HDPE or nylon?

hdpe is waxy and can be scratched with finger nail easily, hdpe resists acetone but nylon doesn't.

It's a small 3 1/2 inch vice which is handy for smaller jobs.

If I had more space I`d get a smaller one too. I got the 6" heavy duty Record from work years ago when a workshop was being decommissioned. Cost me £2 as a scrap item. If I`d had a bigger garage I could've got more useful stuff.

I have a 2" vice in my watch room......that's a little easier to lift than the beast in the garage.

    Are they a direct fit?

Didn't notice 'discontinued'. Seems out of stock everywhere.

My soft jaws are getting old too, my record is a big blue and I put an extra long tool steel handle on it, it’s a beast now..

funnily enough, replaced the fibre jaws on my small vice about a week ago, record irwin ones for about £8 on ebay

I have plastic moulded ones that are quite good on my larger vice....shown for scale with 2lb ball pein hammer!

Indeed it is, but it's mounted incorrectly on your bench.

The plastic moulded ones would probably be ok if I could find some to fit.

I think you can get similar in differing sizes- those are 6” ones in the photo.
    Ps it’s not really a 2lb hammer

The plastic ones shown in the photo I posted come in different widths. The exact width isn't really critical, as they hold on to the steel jaws with magnets, so you can shuffle them to and fro along the jaws. Which is useful, because the ones I have at the moment have grooves and slots moulded in, and sometimes it's handy to be able to offset them to handle irregular shaped workpieces.

The vice is a 4 1/2 inch one, and the jaws were from memory 120mm.

I could check, but it's raining cats and dogs AICBA to go to the garage to check!

That is bloody brilliant. A proper monster. Quick release jaw too by the look of it.

There's something about big old Vice's that appeal to me.

That's not a workshop, there's no swarf, shavings, sweat or bloodstains! (or rings where the teacups have been left to stew cold!).
