Land Rover Discovery 2 vs. 3

    Evening All,

Hopefully relocating to the country after the lockdown ends so long as my chain remains intact.

I’m looking for a cheap 4x4 hack and have fond memories of the TD5 Disco 2 I bought from my Dad a few years back. He bought it from new and it was well looked after so I inherited a sorted truck. It was the S version so no sunroofs or complex suspension to go wrong.

Prices for diesel 2s and 3s are broadly comparable around the changeover years so I wondered if I’d be better looking for a simple TD5 S Disco 2 or if the 3 was a better bet.

Clearly I would rather have a TD5 Defender but I have other things to spend my money on!

Apologies for any punctuation errors - Tapatalk seems to remove my apostrophes!

Jesus that’s a hard one to be fair. It would depend on the condition of both vehicles you’d be looking at. Both vehicles are great however both have major issues which could cost you big time.....pm me your number and I’d be happy to discus the pitfalls of both vehicles.
itll be a long one otherwise

Disco 2 all day long, we had a 3, chuffing awful, went back to a 2.
Flaky electronics and the v6 diesel is a disaster, it’s a Citroen v6 and chucks out injectors, glow plugs and egr valves for fun not to mention a host of other expensive problems.
With a 2 you’re getting a better car, if you’re after a diesel the td5 is bullet proof and runs exceptionally well with a map, mines ES spec and has the sunroofs which do not leak! Don’t be scared of the higher spec, relatively uncomplicated to work with, just watch out for rust and oil leaks and keep on top of servicing but the td5 is a better vehicle.. if you want a newer one, skip the disco 3 and get a disco 4, happy to discuss if you want to know anymore

I'm a big fan of the Discovery Series I.
An early (pre-ECU) 300tdi would be a great investment if you can find one solid enough bodywise.
Mind you, the attraction for me is that they are self-repairable. If you have to pay for welding and mechanical services I suppose it wouldn't make much difference what model you buy.

I've had both and the D3 is by far the better car. That being said, my D3 was probably the most reliable LR I've owned (6 years, a wheel bearing and a brake calI per other than tyres brakes and servicing) but I reckon I got a good one.
If you want cheap truck, a D3 of that age, in all likelyhood won't be that. The D2 will be easier and cheaper to repair as long as it's rust free, I'm sure FFF will put you right on things to look out for.

Have you considered an older Range Rover? This is my 1991 Classic with the 3.9 V8 engine and all the toys including working aircon, heated windscreen etc. A lovely drive and it makes me smile every time I look at it.

    Lovely!

Problem is a nice Disco 2 is £3-4K. A nice classic RR is x5 or x6 that amount so unfortunately out of my budget.

Can't comment on the D2, but my Disco3 turned out to be an absolute money pit. One previous owner, low miles, FSH, I thought i had bought a good one...
Turned out to be an expensive mistake.
They are an expensive vehicle to maintain if all is well which I was fine with, but mine was riddled with ECU issues and would never go without several trips a year to my (excellent) local LR specialist in between its services.
I loved the car for its practicality (7 seater, fantastic cargo space, comfort on long journeys) but it just became non viable from a cost point of view.

I can't imagine that the Discovery 2 could be worse, but who knows!

I had a chat with FFF last night and came to the conclusion that a 2 would be the better option for me due to its simplicity compared with the 3. The only thing I need to do is find one that's not rotten!

By far the main issue with the D2 is the rear chassis sections- 1998-2002 are better than 2002.5 to 2004.5. As been mentioned if you find a bad D3 it will be an horrendous money pit. For me the D2 would be my choice as overall cost will likely be less over a given period, add that to the fact they are simpler to work on, less to go wrong and parts are cheaper. Both of these cars now are roughly in the same price range ( late D2 & early D3 ) and unless you do your homework I can guarantee at some point your watch funds will be drastically reduced.
    Good luck to the OP
