Back again at £399.99 as a Black Friday deal on Amazon.

Only the black model as far as I can see.

Thanks for the 'heads up' but I delayed too long...again.

Think I'd prefer the Bambino Pro as it's smaller and has a very short heat up time. None on Amazon at eh moment, so I'll just keep watching.

Bezzera, ECM, Rancilio, ... which one to choose? Looking for a portafilter

We call it over here „Siebträger Espresso Maschine“ and should be correct translated like that.

Have since years just a (bloody) Nespresso standard capsule machine. No comparison. Just practical and handsome. I know. Owned a Gaggia Classic years ago which was better but sold it. Love Espresso. Many Espresso per day! Without milk. No need for a “zwei Kreislauf „ double circuit machine. Aware that I also need a coffee mill. No problem. Good coffee beans over here. Was looking at the ECM Classica. Seems to have a hype and run. Probably it’s money worth. Was trying to understand the (probably slight - not so sure) differences between the alternatives in the same price range (new 1k). Thanks

ECM are amongst the best machines in the world, the build quality is the best. I have a Mechanika, and wouldn’t swap it for anything. Rancilio are budget machines, and Bezerra are old fashioned and not worth bothering with.

You should ask j0hnbarker how he's got on with his Rocket Apartamento (see his earlier posts).

I've had a Rocket for years and it's been superb.

    Loved it!

Best money I ever spent. So much better built than the Rancilio and the end result is a nicer espresso.

I swapped grinders too and ditched the Rocky for a Faustino. Again, money well spent. The timer and step-less grinding have been a revelation.

    Would definitely recommend Rocket equipment.

Sorry if you've already worked this out but it took me a moment or two...he's looking for recommendations for a machine that uses a manual portafilter.

Bumping this thread for a recommendation for a coffee supplier. Would anyTZers like to try coffee freshly roasted and delivered by a new firm set up by one of my industry colleagues since he lost his regular job. I've just ordered some based on the excellent feedback these guys are receiving on our work forum.

Looking for a recommendation please, for pre-ground coffee, to use for making "Espresso", in a stove top coffee maker.

I've picked up a Bialetti coffee maker for Christmas, and wondered what the forum itk coffee drinkers recommend.

    Thanks.

They specialise in single origin. They'll grind to your spec after roasting.

I’ve just put in my second order from Pebble & Pine.

Very impressed with their coffee, and you get 20% off first order, it seems

They will grind the beans to your requirement also.

    https://pebbleandpine.co.uk/collections/coffee-beans

I’m still loathe to go for a subscription with companies, but may go that route when I run out of my big COSTCO bags.

Whenever I use ground coffee - I tend to vac it down in bags for 1 week (I only use those when I am working away from home)

Just placed an order, thank you for the heads up.

It would be good to hear more about their relationships with their growers - they're competing with several others in London who have a wealth of information on their collaboration with and support of their growers.

Looking forward to trying their wares!

I created this map of coffee roasters, just so folk could see who's local to them:

Recommend getting a Wilfa grinder and grind your own to your own spec (to suit brew method / espresso / mocha pot). Beans stay fresher than ground coffee.

    Thanks.
For years I used shop bought Lavazza Qualità Oro Coffee before switching to whole beans and a hand grinder. The latter, as many threads on here will attest, is something of a rabbit hole once you take the first step.

Why not start out with shop bought ground coffee until you refine your technique for using your moka pot (YouTube link...instead of cooling the pot with cold water I simply pour out the coffee at that stage) before switching to ground coffee from a roaster (I use www.redber.co.uk as they have plenty to choose from)?

One thing to mention: I've found that it takes a few brews to get the pot working correctly...I think it's something to do with conditioning the gasket as the same thing happens if you change it.

There was a list on one of the coffee forums, but I was interested in using local suppliers. Took a little while (especially as some roasters don't list their addresses on their websites), but ended up as something quite (I think) useful!

A wee thread bump! Firstly thanks for this - lots to discover!

So at the moment I've tried Square Mile, Rave and Altitude Coffee that was highlighted above. So far Altitude have been best - their blend in particular is superb and the single origin was no slouch either - not cheap mind! Having tried Rave a few times now, not impressed - I find their roasting a bit heavy handed, lacks the finesse of Square Mile and Altitude.

Going to give Pebble and Pine a go next - they're cheaper to boot (edit: not much cheaper, sized at 200g, but to be honest that's a good size for single origins as otherwise can get a bit boring....).

I've tried quite a few along the way, but find a lot of them have an overpowering element to the flavour. I don't think my palette is particularly sophisticated; I prefer coffee to taste like coffee.

I keep coming back to the Redber Brazil Yellow Cayuai (dark) for a daily bean, it suits both espresso (for me) and a latte (for her). We get through a 1kg bag every 8 days, so at £15 plus P&P it doesn't break the bank either. Also find it's best rested for 7-10 days before opening.

Happy to add to the map if anyone's got recommendations...

Brewing method also makes a difference - mine is V60 and I prefer medium roasts. And more on the 'berry' side of the descriptions given. In general, most of the beans sourced by these companies are pretty darn good, and roasting then becomes the factor. With say Rave, I've tried varying the grams per cup and grain size and I've concluded I just don't like how they're roasted. It's a bit too harsh and any particular flavour is just lost - yes you need bitterness, but not overpowering.

I also reckon blends seem to work better for a daily brew and a single origin when you want a change.

Redber will be on the list next after pebble and pine!

I passed the link to this thread to the owner, Joe Townshend. He replied

Altitude Coffee works alongside a UK based green coffee supplier, exclusively buying specialty grade Arabica beans. They have been operating for over 25 years with a fairly unique model of operating. Coffees are only purchased from producers that the supplier has physically visited and approved of their produce. Cupping is done at source prior to acceptance of any lot, ensuring quality control starts from the outset.

They have harboured great relationships over the years with their coffee producers and currently pay double the commodity price for the beans on average. This ensures the producers are well remunerated for their hard work, as well as allowing them to develop better farming techniques and continually improve their produce each season.

At Altitude we want to contribute towards the improved livelihoods of these producers, as well as buying the best beans on the market. Our costs may be higher as a consequence but we feel this issue is important to support our producers.

If anyone on the forum ever has any questions feel free to email or call. I'm always happy to discuss anything around the beans or anything coffee generally!

    https://altitude-coffee.co.uk/ or call Joe on 020 8614 0708.

If anyone wants to know why they stuck 22,536 feet in as their altitude, Joe tells me it's because on an old fashioned phone, the numbers correspond to A-C-L-D-N.

Why not name their speciality green supplier(s)?
Nordic approach, mercanta, Wakefield, Cafe imports, Vollers etc
As a buyer I see no point in not naming your importer. (Many Roaster’s do)

One point I'd pass back to Altitude is that Sq Mile has a filter (no pun intended) to show expresso or filter blends that is very handy. You seem to have to read all the descriptions and/or use the roast to try and work out what is best for what on his site.

I have a bit of a question here. My preferred method of coffee preparation is using a Moka pot however it’s being a bit frustrating at the moment.

I have a Hario hand grinder and prefer Lavazza Oro beans at the moment but the results lately using the Moka pot have been hit and miss. Sometimes it’s perfect, thick, unctuous with a lovely crema and takes a couple of minutes to produce. Other times it’s weak and thin and brews within seconds of being placed on the job. As far as I am aware, all elements are constant (bean, grind size, weight, heat etc). I fill the bottom with boiling water to just below the valve.

    Where am I going wrong?

That sounds like channeling, ie the water sometimes finds a 'hole' through the coffee and most of it goes through the weak point so that much of the coffee is not used in the brew. In order to avoid this I recently started stirring the ground coffee with a thin rod to distribute it evenly before tapping the holder to level it off. My next move, should the problem recur, will be to watch some YouTube videos for advice on dosing an espresso portafilter to avoid channeling by varying the grind and dose.

I'm inclined to agree. I think that my Hario is wearing down, as the grounds it produces are starting to vary quite a lot. Will certainly look into it. Thank you!

As an update to my query, I think i've made some good improvements after a few more failed attempts.

Fully cleaned and descaled the Moka pot.
Fully cleaned and zeroed my grinder and have it on the third notch.
Grind the dose (18g) and put half in the basket then tap it side on to level and tap it on the worktop to settle. Repeat with the remaining half of the grounds.
Medium heat until the coffee appears then down to lowest heat until desired coffee has been brewed.

18g ground coffee yielded 80g of coffee as per the above process and having read quite a bit on this, is higher than the optimum approx 1:3 ratio and I think this is because my Moka pot is too big (the 18g dose only fills the basket to around three quarters).

The coffee is also a little on the bitter side so may be over extracting with the higher yield?

When you say "until desired coffee has been brewed" how are you determining this?

I watch for a gradual lightening of colour and try to catch it very soon afterwards by pouring out the coffee (others cool the base...see below). The rapid increase in flow and spluttering that follows is to be avoided:

I think you're doing the right thing by sorting out the distribution and dose. I leave a little gap at the top once my coffee is in the funnel because if I increase the dose so that the funnel is full to the brim I get signs of the pot being over pressure (slight venting around the seal).

Basically by the volume that has been brewed. I also never let it splutter and dunk it in water to stop the brewing process when the colour changes as you say.

I decided to upgrade from my cheap supermarket Bean 2 Cup machine as it only made pots, and was also a simple gravity fed filter setup. Found I was making a full pot in the morning but then throwing away about half a pot later in the day.

Anyway, picked up a Melitta Caffeo with “perfect milk” steamer last week and have been using it with Caffe Prima Italian Mahogany beans. Very happy so far with the results.
The factory default heat settings needed cranking up, so I had to read the manual to figure that one out. Since doing that I’ve been starting the day with espresso (lovely crema), lunch time latte to keep me ticking over and a cappuccino in the evening.
Just wish the water and bean tanks were a little larger, but no big issue.

Obviously not as sophisticated as most of the setups you guys are using, but think it’ll do for my needs. My son has been working as a part time barista for the past 3yrs while studying at Uni... but I can’t get him to make me a brew... so keeping it simple is probably the best thing for me !

Well done. Had one in my basket umm'd and ahh'd too long before deciding and then they were gone. My only slight concern is how good they actually are for filter which is what I currently do. Flat burrs seem to be better for that but really I want something good for everything which the Niche probably is at the price.

Yes, I want it for everything and adjustment between filter and espresso seems easier than most from what I've read.

If I don't get on with it they do seem to fetch a decent price on eBay!

There was a link to that site after this message (received today):

Just a heads up that new stock will be going live today (Tuesday 6th April) at 2pm UK Time.
These will be pre-orders for June delivery.

And so I presume that they have sold them all.

Yes, as PickleB says, all sold (for June delivery) I believe. Luckily I only registered week or so ago to be updated when on sale again. Can't see link to this now but keep checking.

My el-cheapo Andrew James espresso machine has a torn group head seal & it looks like it's not a standard part. Andrew James are no longer trading, so I'm in the market for a new machine. Seems a shame for the sake of a seal, but hey.

I'm currently looking at a Sage Duo-Temp pro. The Bambino plus can't dispense hot water, which rules it out.

The Duo-Temp has preinfusion, 15 bar pump (aiming for 9 bar extraction) & a PID controller. It doesn't have a 3 way valve, doses aren't metered (I use 30ml espresso cups, so don't really care.)

Are there other machines in this bracket worth considering? I'm mainly making Americano, with the odd latte or cappuccino for guests.
