    Alexa type thingy

Hi, been looking at the alexa things, would like some help, want one for the kitchen, only want to spend around £50, any ideas on the best one or even something pre owned at that price would be welcome.

Definitely a 5" Echo Show. Ideal for the kitchen. Screen for recipes, timer, and reminders. I got the 8" which is sometimes on offer at Amazon.

I have an echo dot and a google hub with a big screen in the kitchen.

They are both good, but I use the google one far more. It integrates seamlessly with android TVs and phones.

I have 3 echo dots around the house, fine for asking general stuff and a bit of background music in smallish rooms, not the best sound for cranking up. Standard dot is £30 or new dot with a clock is £40. Sound is alot better on my 2 gen3 dots (the fabric ones) compared to the old gen1 or 2 i have

If you fancy a screen with it, the 5in show 5 is £50 and 8in show 8 is £60 currently

If you want better sound than the dot, there's the full size echo for £90 or the echo studio for £190, no experience of either, but at those prices I'd probably rather get a Sonos One for £160.

Unless you need a good speaker included just get the basic cheap pick/dots. If you have SONOS get Alexa. I have both and only use the Alexa to control SONOS as that isn't available on Google.

One tip: set up a guest network (still with a password etc) and put anything smart home related on that. Don't have them on your main network.

I have a few, kids have dots, we have a show 8 which is great. I would recommend at £60 loads of music and you can stream to it very good. Sound is decent too.

I don't have a laptop but set up Alexa by downloading Amazon Alexa app. Alexa will then automatically connect to your home WiFi.

What’s the benefit of the guest Wi-Fi route?

Privacy. I wouldn't have Hue, Nest, Alexa Ring etc on my main WiFi network. If you read up on it the invasion is scary.

I sacked them off a while ago - did not like the invasion of privacy.

One example - talking to the Mrs about something, several ‘suggested buys’ then miraculously appear when you browse Amazon.

    No thank you.

    Alexa

I have the Alexa Show 8.
I tried the Alexa show 5 but the sound quality was shocking.
Sent it back for a refund then purchased the 8.

Its great for weather, messages, music ( Prime) and it links my front door camera .
The larger size of the 8 makes viewing easier
Sound quality on the 8 is fine.

    Mrs T loves it
