I enjoy 2 different cocktails. A malt whiskey one, ie whatever malt I have open with a dash of the same tipped in, and a spiced rum one, ie a decent glug of spiced rum with a little fat coke tipped in, chunk of lemon & some ice. Repeat as necessary.

Very, very dirty!

@ism123 Cocchi Vermouth Di Torino arrived today. Just on my 2nd negroni. Its transformed a fantastic drink to another level. Thanks for the heads up.

That’s great to hear. There is a watch connection: the tip came from a barman at a JLC event I was lucky enough to be invited to. Sadly, his other tip - a negroni sbagliata - replacing gin for smoky tequila - didn’t work. Disgusting.
My negroni theory is this: the 1-1-1 ratio means you need drinks of equivalent quality. Campari is campari. The gin has to be good quality, so why use cheap Martini?
Glad it’s worked and thanks for the feedback:)

Surely loosing the gin changes it a different cocktail?
My wife quite likes a negroni with prosecco in place of the gin but then you may as well have pimms and lemonade? But what do I know?
Anyway, great suggestion with the Cocchi vermouth, definitely going to be replacing the martini with this.

Sorry my bad - think the sbagliata uses prosecco in lieu of gin. But the smoky tequila was still disgusting and horrendously alcoholic.
I guess in answer to your question over time the negroni has been developed and morphed into other things. I like to stay true to the image in my head of Count Negroni in his 1920s Art Deco bar sipping the original version :)
The Cocchi vermouth is sometimes on offer on prime by the way.
I made this yesterday, for the first time - equal quantities of each - (Same makes)............
Mmmmmm........ I had to add a 1/3 can of sprite to manage it.
Do you need a whole heap of crushed ice in it? It seemed to be a bit ‘thick and sticky’ for me.
Any other suggestions?
Managed to get a bottle of passion fruit purée so knocking up Pornstar Martini’s for ‘er last night, not bad either.
Anyone got a really good go to mojito ??
Cheers
Pitch
Yep
Tall tumbler or bistro glass - just over a 1/2 pint volume.
Cut half a llime into about 4-5 bits.
Stick it in the glass, with a level tablespoon of sugar (I use golden caster, but it really makes no difference)
Couple of mint leaves go in (to taste, I actually prefer a Caipirinha - no mint at all)
Crush it all in the glass with the end of a small rolling pin or other wooden stick (I have a special one for this). You want to release all the lime juice, start to dissolve the sugar and bruise any mint.
3/4 fill the glass with crushed ice.
Fill to the top of the ice with Cachaca (or white rum, very similar).
Stir.
Drink
You can add a little spakle if you want, I prefer not.

Your tastebuds need to get used to the bitter that comes from the Campari and, to a lesser extent the Vermouth. But once you do, it’s gently addictive. You can also put some vermouth in your bourbon (1 part V for 2 parts B) and you have a Manhattan.

Sorry, missed your post until now................
I think you have hit on it
I had decided to reduce the Campari.
- 1 shot gin
- 1 shot vermouth
- 1/2 shot Campari.
- Add half a can of sprite.
Quite a nice cocktail but gets you hammered quite quickly.
Might even go as far as to replace the Vermouth and Campari when the current bottles are done.

I favour an Americano, i.e. a Negroni without the gin and, incidentally, the first drink mentioned in a James Bond novel.
I don't think anyone has mentioned a Manhattan in this thread, I make mine with two parts Canadian Whisky, one part Martini Rosso, 2 or 3 dashes of Angoustura Bitters, stirred over ice and then strained and served straight up, garnished with a cherry and/or a slice of orance zest.
Can I recommend the Boulevardier, essentially a negroni with bourbon instead of gin, though you will want a little more bourbon, to taste.
Alternatively, substitute gin for Prosecco, and you have a Negroni Spagliato (‘incorrect negroni’), which is a fine drink. As with martinis, one is not enough, two is far too many.
+1 for an Old Fashioned or Whiskey Sour.
