Sounds like a great thing to do. Unfortunately I can't even draw the curtains but I'm sure you'll find someone to help you on this forum, it is indeed deep and wide at times.

Title says it all really.
I’ve written a short rhyming story for kids. It’s about embracing and accepting your differences. My older brother has Downs Syndrome and growing up with him in the 80s was tough. People didn’t have the same attitudes as they have today.
It’s about a polar bear called Herbert who is nervous about starting school because he has patch of brown fur that he thinks makes him standout. When he gets to school he soon realises that all his classmates have unique features too.
Anyway. My plan is for it to be a large format picture book but I don’t have an illustrator.
I can’t pay anyone, nor am I looking to make a profit. Was thinking I may self publish for charity - whether that be for the NHS or a Downs charity. I’d love to try and get it published “properly” but wouldn’t have a clue where to start.
I have the manuscript complete. I’ve shared it with all of my friends and family that have kids in the right age range (I don’t have kids) and the response has been amazing, even without the pictures. And I say that because a lot of the feedback has been directly from the kids - who have no filter - and if they thought it was shit, they’d say so.
Bit of a random request but this forum often has the power to surprise and amaze!
If you don’t ask......

I dabble in the dark art of children's books. Might be able to help with the illustrator, although thats not my area.
Bizarrely the last one I wrote also featured a white bear!
Ping me a PM and I'll do what I can to help.
And keep us updated...
In the Sotadic Zone, apparently.
To bump this, I’ve spoken to Joe and he’s emailed the manuscript over. It’s good. Really good. Well worth getting illustrated and into print.
My wife is an illustrator but mainly portraits, pets etc.
My wife’s friend, however, specialises in board games and books.

Cannot offer advice in regards to illustrations, but very interested to buy the finished product once it's finalised.
Someone who lies about the little things will lie about the big things too.
great idea and with lockdown shouldn't have trouble finding an illustrator whom normally work from home anyway....
I can recommend a mate of mine from school's wife - she is very talented (also a writer too)

Thanks for all the replies. I will take a look at all of the recommendations - however the advice from my literary consultancy is that when approaching publishers it’s actually best NOT to have an illustrator as they’ll typically want to use / recommend their own.
Does mean you lose a little control over the finished article but increases the chance of getting a deal.
I’m still very much finding my way but learning every day.

Do you have kids mate? I’m still gathering feedback on the manuscript (sans illustrations) as the advice is that the words need to work on their own to have a decent chance of success.
Happy to share the manuscript and get some feedback from your little ones. They’re the best critics!
Yes, I have a five year old.
