I don't suspect anything untoward or suspicious, but I am a bit curious about an Italian registered aircraft, owned by (or just working for?) a German company operating in the UK. That the company is also used by the Netherlands Dept for Transport goes, I suppose, to show the international nature of such commercial work.

Earlier today I looked up the Ordnance Survey blog (it's still there) about its own aircraft...G-NOSE and G-TASK. Having looked them up, both were owned and operated by RVL and one is now out of service. The other is no longer in OS livery.
The track anomalies can be caused by the method of tracking linked to the transponder/receivers. ADS-B aircraft are usually tracked very accurately, but under MLAT a lot of the track is dead reckoning in some situations, so it can be miles out, literally.

The aircraft could have been doing any manner of things prior to its reconnaissance/photo tracks, setting up the cameras or responding to air traffic direction.

A lot of these smaller aviation companies really have to sweat the assets for them to earn their keep, so not surprising they’re going wherever the money takes them.

    .
The other thing to remember is that track takes him through Southamptons control zone so will have limited scope for swanning about then he has to contend with Lee on Solent and it’s little traffic and fleetlands. So could be just doing a normal days filming.

Only one or two flights a day now from Southampton so they're probably taking advantage of the lull in traffic. I've seen one of them use Bembridge airport in the last few days.

We had a Chinook over here yesterday evening (just south of Blackpool. Never seen one here before apart from airshow) Wondering if it was delivering medical equipment.

Joint Helicopter Command have established an Aviation Taskforce to support the COVID response, taking people and equipment from A to B etc.

More than likely a flight under that tasking.

Heard a very different sounding helicopter last night.. went over the house just after 11pm. Sound was very deep / thumping compared to normal stuff (air ambulance, police chopper etc) so I hastily grabbed my phone and loaded FlightRadar24 and to my surprise no sign at all... so presumably it was military and either a Chinhook or Osprey but.. sort of surprising for it to be untrackable!

Only on flight radar to be fair, it will be visible to Air Traffic Control, which is the main thing.

This one will show the military stuff about, you can just filter it to show them or like FR24 specific types.

Thanks for that link, it's very useful. Earlier I found several Hawks and an F16 (off the Netherlands) and now I see a police helicopter over London and several military helicopters around Whitchurch.

Edit Add to that www.ads-b.nl for more information about military aircraft, flights etc.

Do you know, please, why it doesn't show this drone:

G-TEKV is an unmanned air system being flown under a civil permission (as the reg denotes) and the simple reason I think is that it won’t be fitted with ADS-B, as it isn’t required to be.

I suspect that G-TEKV uses a Mode-S transponder and FlightRadar is using MLAT to track its position (borne out by the occasional erratic track being shown), whereas the website adsbexchange tracks aircraft with ADS-B transponders.

That probably explains why it isn’t shown on the latters website.

Thanks for that. The drone has landed now and so I'll have to wait until the next time it's up to check it out.

I seem to remember last time I clicked on G-TEKV it was broadcasting via Mode-S and was being tracked by MLAT on FR24.

I was looking at a Typhoon off the coast of Aberdeen and it just disappeared, at 19,000 feet! Stealthy, or what?

The call sign was Psycho19 or some such thing

Currently 4 RAF aircraft showing on FR24
A C17 has just done a touch and go at Liverpool
A MRT is just about to land after an air to air refuelling session over the North Sea and a C130 is doing circuits
An A400m over the south coast
Don’t often see that may RAF aircraft showing up

Seems as though its Prestwick's turn this evening...ASCOT439.

I suppose that this is an ideal training opportunity for the RAF to train using different airfields and it will give the local ATC and airport control something to think about.

An interesting plane (Hercules) on a long journey: https://tar1090.adsbexchange.com/?icao=a2b423

It comes up as BLOCKED on FR24.

RAF Hercs show up on plane finder- 2 from Brize went about 800 ft above my house yesterday afternoon but that doesn’t show up so assume it’s not RAF.
It’s come some distance already and so assuming it’ll need refuelling at some stage.

As well as the drone mentioned above, 2 aircraft operated by Excel aviation out of Doncaster patrolling the Channel this evening/morning.
CGD23B, G-SCIR for ~3 hours (landing at Southend) then replaced by CGD22B, G-HMGB.

There's a pair of E-3 Sentry aircraft flying contra-rotating circles over the North Sea at the moment. One UK and the other Luxembourg / NATO (LX-N90452). Maybe it's some form of comparison or cross-calibration exercise?

Maybe ASCOT486 (A400 ZM415 https://tar1090.adsbexchange.com/?icao=43c5e9) was one of the targets? It flew out of Brize, dropped to low level over the North Sea and is now returning.

Edit Plus, the NATO E3-A looks to be returning home.
