Just noticed a Hawker Hunter with Reg. ZZ190 on ADS-B - you won't see that very often and even the little icon for it looks Hunter shape, which is why I spotted it.

He is doing touch-and-go at RAF Marham.

See Exercise "Steadfast Noon" for a possible explanation.

I've just found this on Facebook...link...which translates as:

The crew of TF-SIF, a surveillance plane of the Coast Guard, handles border guard for Frontex, the Border Agency of Europe, at Ermarsund at the moment. The crew is based in France and here you can see a beautiful picture of the plane during the light changes as well as pictures that were taken on board the plane during flight.

'Ermarsund' translates from Icelandic as 'English Channel'.

    Air traffic over the Uk

A Ukrainian registered AN12 has just flown over my house, in its way from Birmingham to Skopje
Hmm I wonder what that is carrying?

Chinook has just flown past as well.

All the way from and back to Wiesbaden-Erbenheim? That, IMO, is too long for a training flight.

Hint: Go into settings and uncheck 'Last Leg only'...if you haven't already.

If it’s the same sensor fit that they were planned for it’s not burning off fuel ?

Not at all sure what sensor fit they have but you're right, between circuits and landings they circled the same place for ages so it was a deliberate objective. Maybe it was a training exercise? It didn't look much like any previous surveillance flight that I have seen previously, hence I sought another reason for their circling quite so much.

It seems that the Dutch are taking a turn at patrolling France's the EU border: ADS-B link. But they do include their own shoreline, whereas a similar effort was a bit too far for the Icelandic aircraft.

Update: With a change of shift the UK takes over...using an aircraft contracted from a Belgian Company: ADS-B link

Next morning: It's the Army's turn: ADS-B link.

Watching the Airbus 300M carrying out touch and go landings and takeoffs at Broughton Chester today. As its a cold damp day the vapour trails coming off the wings add to the drama of a big four prop beastie hanging in the sky as it completes its slow speed runs.

    Exercise Cobra Warrior - 1 to 24 March 2023

    RAF-hosted Exercise Cobra Warrior underway:

The first iteration of the Royal Air Force-hosted multinational live-fly exercise Cobra Warrior 2023 is underway with air force detachments from the Belgium and the United States, as well as – for the first time – from Finland, India and Saudi Arabia.

While participants started to arrive on February 27, the exercise live-fly activities involving 70 aircraft run from March 2 to 24. Exercise Cobra Warrior takes place twice a year and is the largest air exercise run by the Royal Air Force. It is designed to train participants in high intensity, large force, tactical air warfighting operations and is being directed by staff at RAF Waddington.

“It is wonderful once again to welcome our fellow RAF and international colleagues to RAF Waddington to participate in this world class air exercise,” said Group Captain Mark Lorriman-Hughes, the RAF Waddington Station Commander. “Cobra Warrior provides an invaluable opportunity for international Allies and Partners to train together in developing operational tactics in the air,” he added.

Besides US aircraft based in the United Kingdom, the Royal Saudi Air Force operates six Eurofighter Typhoons out of RAF Coningsby. Five Indian Air Force Mirage 2000 aircraft, six Belgian Air Force F-16s and six Finnish Air Force F-18s will be flying out of RAF Waddington. The Finnish participation is part of a wider training activity in support of the UK led Joint Expeditionary Force, known as JEF Warrior.

RAF Voyager aircraft flying from RAF Brize Norton are supporting the fast jets conducting air-to-air refuelling operations. In addition, UK Joint Helicopter Command aircraft will be participating, basing at RAF Lemming. The RAF’s Air Mobility Force will be taking part in the exercise, with sorties including deploying elements of 16 Air Assault Brigade during an associated ground mission, that forms part of the overall exercise scenario...

    Very much OT...

...as it's over the Black Sea:

Two Russian Su-27 aircraft conducted an unsafe and unprofessional intercept with a U.S. Air Force Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance unmanned MQ-9 aircraft that was operating within international airspace over the Black Sea today.

At approximately 7:03 AM (CET), one of the Russian Su-27 aircraft struck the propeller of the MQ-9, causing U.S. forces to have to bring the MQ-9 down in international waters. Several times before the collision, the Su-27s dumped fuel on and flew in front of the MQ-9 in a reckless, environmentally unsound and unprofessional manner. This incident demonstrates a lack of competence in addition to being unsafe and unprofessional.

“Our MQ-9 aircraft was conducting routine operations in international airspace when it was intercepted and hit by a Russian aircraft, resulting in a crash and complete loss of the MQ-9,” said U.S. Air Force Gen. James B. Hecker, commander, U.S. Air Forces Europe and Air Forces Africa. “In fact, this unsafe and unprofessional act by the Russians nearly caused both aircraft to crash.”

“U.S. and Allied aircraft will continue to operate in international airspace and we call on the Russians to conduct themselves professionally and safely,” Hecker added...

Hmmm could be spun as ‘attacking’ a NATO asset. It was only a matter of time. Something like this was bound to happen. Thankfully neither side lost and life.

If they used the SU-27 to hit the prop of the drone I would say that the pilot was quite competent in what they were doing.
There’s plenty spin on all reports coming out.

    Nobody has suggested any incompetence?
