    Hi Fi help please

    Hello,

I also posted this in WTB.

A good friend has dropped off, for an extended period, a Quad amp and power amp for me to play with and possibly buy.

Set it up, nice bit of kit, sounds good but no headphone outlet, which is a deal breaker for me.

He pointed out a second hand Pro Ject head amp on eBay, but I have unfortunately missed it.

Not really my specialist field - has anyone got any suggestions? Is there a stand alone switch available I can add to switch between speakers and headphones? I don't really want to spend a fortune on top of the potential cost of the Quad.

    Many thanks, Mark

I spent a great deal of time looking for a high quality headphone amp to use with my digital church organ. I'd allocated significant budget to this, and in the end bought one of these:

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B017VXNL..._zD1JEb6X7059N

While they are oos on Amazon there are plenty available on eBay from various suppliers around the £50-60. They are superb with virtually no colouring of the sound or distortion. I can't imagine you will find a better sounding headphone amp and the price is extremely attractive.

Have a look at this site:
    https://robrobinette.com/HeadphoneRe...Calculator.htm

It will calculate the resistors needed if you input the speaker & headphone impedences.

You could wire the amp output into a switch box & have the speakers on one output & the headphones on another:

The 44 is lovely (grey version in particular) but I'm a sucker for the display on the 66 pre.

I used to have a musical fidelity xcan v2 Headphone amp. It became a hobby project on its own as I replaced the stock valves with a pair of matched mullards , upgraded the caps and opamps , volume pots and finally the power supply. Even swapped the red led for a blue one. Sounded awesome and was good fun to revamp.

    Big components easy soldering.

Pro-ject Head Box S - I picked this up s/h on the bay recently for less than £50 - build quality amazing, sounds great and a top piece of hifi gear. I'm really happy with it for the price.

Thanks for the suggestions and advice.

It's the Quad 99/909. Sounds good to me, an improvement on my amp but it's a long time since I altered my set up.

    Regards, Mark
