My wife has an old quartz watch that has a lot of sentimental value. It was her first ever watch and given to her by her great-grandmother. I've replaced the battery and it seems to be running well and keeping time. I like to do a little more work, both to please her and pass the time for me.
1. I believe it has an acrylic crystal, how can I be sure?
2. If it does, is polywatch pretty easy to use.
3. Any suggestions on taking some of the scratches out of the case.
3. Any suggestions for a good make of black leather strap. 10mm spacing between the lugs.

1. As Peter says, try toothpaste (or Polywatch) - if after a few minutes the crystal starts to become nice and clean and the scratches disappear, it's acrylic. If after 45 minutes it looks like you haven't even started yet, it's Hardlex or sapphire (yep, been there, done that)Originally Posted by gerrudd

Is that a chrome plated case? If so, would a cape cod cloth be like trying to mend a lightbulb by ironing it?
A little toothpaste and the crystal already looks better.
Case is stainless steel.

If you remove the strap and get some cilit bang ,diluted in water in a bowl . Use a cloth dipped in solution to wipe over the case and sides . Not too wet as you dont want to get any water ingress in the crown !!
You may need a toothbrush to get rid of muck between the lugs , and a wood toothpick if its still in the small gaps where the lugs meet the case !
Should come up a treat , if you have some leather cleaner/conditioner you could do the strap . Keep you busy for a hour or so
Is the case fully polished? No brushed parts? Then cape cod should work.

Just to echo what Der Amf is suggesting: What does the caseback say? If it says "stainless steel back" that will mean that the case itself is plated base metal - that being so I wouldn't use a cape cod.

For the crystal question tap it with a finger nail, if it feels like plastic then its acrylic but if it feels hard like tapping a piece of glass then it is mineral or sapphire etc.
It does indeed say "stainless steel back". I'll try the diluted cilit bang and I've ordered a new strap. Thanks everyone for the tips.
