36mm watch

The current lockdown is giving me a lot of time to research a new purchase - the hole to fill is now a 36mm watch as a daily wearer.

In the past I have owned a Junghans Max Bill and Rolex Sub (new model).

To be honest, I loved the Sub but it was just too big for my feminine sized wrists...

So I think 36mm is my limit unfortunately. I really liked the Junghans and although it was 36mm, the face really took all the size so it wore much bigger.

Style wise, I am looking for a nice dress style watch, possibly on a leather strap but open to other styles.

Budget is open, as much as it can be in these times!

Anyone got any suggestions?

Maybe not fitting the dress category, but when I think about 36mm watches the Omega 90’s Dynamic stands out as one of the best to me.

36mm and dress watch I would say vintage and the World is your oyster. Tons of beautiful vintage watches at reasonable cost this size and in wonderful condition, Omega, Longines, IWC, endless really. Gold cases offer even better VFM and are often not much higher priced than their steel equivalent.

If strictly wanting new look up some of the Longines Heritage range, they have some really nice releases over the last few years.

The new, about to be released Cartier Santos Dumont XL hand wounded has certainly peaked my interest and at just around the 34mm mark but appears to wear a little larger could be a contender.

I’ve been very happy with my DJ, modern version with the new movement. I went smooth bezel and oyster bracelet because I felt it was more of a daily wearer.

This would be my suggestion too. If quartz is an issue just research the Grand Seiko 9F movement - the tech and engineering that goes into them is astonishing.

The 36mm Explorer is an obvious choice but I had a 114270 and I ended up getting rid of it because I got bored. However I'm not bored with the ostensibly asthetically similar Grand Seiko SBGX061 and the difference is the dial - the cut and finish of the Grand Seiko indicies is sublime and it prevents the watch from feeling bland unlike the Rolex.

If it has to be mechanical I'd be going Datejust on jubilee. If money is no object, Day Date on leather.

But, if you can live with something a little smaller, hows about the 34mm Air-King with the engine turned bezel? One of my favourite watches looks wise, but sadly just a little too small for me as a daily wearer I recon. The blue dialled version is beautiful.

I forgot about the MkXII...good suggestion. Also, the white/silver faced Longines Conquest is a bit more dressy and was one of my favourites for a 36mm watch.

I see a lot of really great suggestions but I didn't see the JLC Reverso mentioned. It is not a round case but a rectangular shape. It is a classic and it comes in different sizes and different dial options also.

The Max Bill auto is 38mm. And having had one myself, would agree that it wears very large. It felt quite high on the wrist, too, despite being only 10mm thick.

The Max Bill manual is 34mm, and I wish I had bought that instead.

I'm not aware of there having been a 36mm Max Bill....

I've just checked their site, and they now do a 34mm auto as well. The quartz is also 38mm, though 2mm thinner.

For me, it would be hard to look past the SBGX009, the JDM Grand Seiko 9F quartz with amazing fit and finish.

I ventured into the 36mm range last year, I normally wear my 14060m or Moonie and was unsure.

I now have a 36mm TT datejust and love it

The newer 36mm datejusts also feel much heftier watches with the modern bracelets than the old ones. I'd still go with either 5 digit old one with white buckley dial or hidden clasp new one from 2016 or so.

Or you could go with Omega:
- 168.024 / 166.010
- 168.022

I'd get nice condition 166.010 and have a local good guy watchmaker service it!

I don’t blame you. The JLC movement is part of the attraction. As for scratches and dings, well that’s inevitable for a watch that’s 22 years old or so.

SBGW231 from Grand Seiko. 37mm, hand wound, 70 hours power reserve, you will struggle to find a better dress watch for the money.

I had the 39mm and it was always just slightly too big so I went on the hunt for a 36mm. I gave up and went for an Explorer 114270 instead.

I still think the Railmaster would have been perfect.
