    Hit and run question.

Just went to get something from the car when i noticed that someone has driven into it and left the bumper dented and partially dislodged from the bodywork. It must have hit reasonably hard as it had been shunted forward too.
No witnesses and no CCTV unfortunately, must've happened overnight.
Do I have any recourse or do I just have to suck it up? Is it worth reporting to the police and insurer? I don't intend to make a claim as I only just had a non fault claim settled just before Christmas that will undoubtedly put my insurance up.

I would keep quiet, if you tell your insurers you will be paying more next year, if it’s not to bad get it fixed

Not really any recourse I'm afraid.

You're probably supposed to notify your insurer but may well increase premiums. If you're not going to tell them I wouldn't tell police either.

    This.

Police will not be interested as nobody injured and the insurers will add it to your list which may cost you in the future (as Adrian has said).

Thanks folks, most frustrating but these things happen. I guess on the bright side I'm working from home at the moment so at least I don't need to drive around much.

You can presumably claim if you have comprehensive insurance but, as you recognicse and otehrs have said, you'll get shafted on your renewal premium if you claim.

The Motor Insurance Bureau (MIB) is there to compensate & assist with ‘hit & run’ claims with Untraced Drivers - have a read of this: https://www.mib.org.uk/making-a-claim/claiming-against-an-untraced-driver/

And as noted already, even if you never need to actually claim under your own Motor Policy, it will still oblige you to notify your Insurer regardless.

For Property Damage only claims via the MIB, it’s a condition that you notify the Police within 5 days of the accident (they’ll do sod all, mind, it’s just to keep within the system).

The MIB operates from a pool of money levied against Insurers generally to meet such claims.

    Good luck.

I believe this changed in 2017 and now if you have fully comp insurance you are required to claim via this rather that the mib.

Cheers all. I'm just going to get this sorted myself. Bumper isn't too expensive and I have a mate who's handy with these sorts of things so will probably work out cheaper than the insurance route.

I think getting it sorted privately is the right answer.

I was bumped in a car park. Fortunately the guy didnt drive off, he just parked further down. Cameras caught it all. On confronting him with his paint on my car I thought no issue. Yes no fault on my side but during the 5 years after all my premiums car and bikes went up.

When I asked why I was told if you have one claim you are likely to have another. When I explained I wasnt even in the vehicle they didnt want to know.

Given you have had a no loss claim before the insurers would start to “tot up” and you future premium will reflect this.

This happened to me last June. My then premiums of £650 have jumped to over £1k on renewal (I am in London) so whilst the policy states you need to report it, there will be a hit to you either way.

Similar situation on my older Porsche Boxster. Checked insurance and it has to go to an approved bodyshop outside London that specialises in top marque cars... can imagine what that will cost!

So they will probably write it off, argue about value and bump premium.

I don’t know what to do as it still needs repair and won’t be cheap even using a local firm privately.

    Dilemma.
