Shapps has just Tweeted that there will be a 6 month extension to MOT's due after 30th March.

When you look long into an abyss, the abyss looks long into you.........

My local M.O.T is still open and has no plans to shut.
Apologies from me too.
Yes you’re right. No need for garages to open however they are on the list of permitted businesses to remain operational throughout the lockdown.
Mine was due on 16th April so I got it done on Monday. Rats! I could have had 6 months extra for free.
I work for a car dealership, sad to see the sales floors closed - they are fullfulling the last few orders that have come in then will deal with the rest in the future
the service dept remains full steam ahead in shifts to keep the social distancing rules and H&S ... mainly because they supplied the ambulances and have the parts and diagnostics machines for them
The trouble is if you put your car in for an MOT and it needs parts/work doing. The trade might be different but I'm struggling to get parts for my project car at the moment.
Garages will remain open

Given the circumstances I'm granting an MOT temporary exemption so that if your MOT is due from 30th March 2020 you will automatically receive a SIX-month extension. However, you must still keep your car in a roadworthy condition and garages will remain open if you need repairs.
My Daughters partner works for GSF, their CEO is telling them that they are an essential service and its business as usual, forcing the trade counters to remain open with no regard for the staff, people are queueing for service parts along the road and he is having to serve them, all because they are supposedly stuck at home doing nothing.
the government list of essential services includes transport, they have latched on to this, it is pure greed, anything that was really needed to keep essential vehicles working can be delivered by van on a trade only basis.
Hopefully the MOT extension kills this off.
Bu**er, I've just paid £200 to get mine through
I have a slot booked but I don’t want to go in I’ve 2 months left anyway.
Hard facts here

Had mine booked for early April but pulled it forward last week to tomorrow. Small village garage so might as well get it done. A free 6 months would have been nice though. :)
Mine is due on the 29th, has it booked for tomorrow but decided that things were going to go south so took my car in last week. Garage was ghostly quiet, normally I’d have to leave the car there but as it was so quiet they did it while I waited.
Paranoid, maybe but I dont want anyone in my car.
wife had hers yesterday as she had to drive to London and back today to pick our son up - she wanted to ensure she was road legal
turned out they found a screw in one of the tyres so was happy she did it before the 400 mile round trip
Mine is due next month but garage it was booked into has shut, I got a slot for Monday elsewhere, got a call to say they're clearing workshop and then shutting today/tomorrow, others in the area I've called are doing mainly repair work without any extras, few said regular/previous customers only, staff on rotas to keep space in workshop. Six month extension will hopefully allow use till things return to normal, and I can get the test done, there will be a rush starting in 6 months when exemption runs out and swells the normal expiry dates.
My van is booked in for early tomorrow morning. I called the garage today and they said that tomorrow is the last day. I could have waited as its not due till the 2nd April and got a 6 month extension but decided just to go ahead and have it done rather than take advantage of the new decision.
My motorbikes MOT ran out last week am I right in thinking I can’t ride it until 30th but could ride after this date for 6months?
Our village garage and MOT station is staying open (at least for now). If the garage stays open, I see no reason why they need to close the MOT bit of it, plus I like to get my car serviced and tested at the same time.
Whoever does not know how to hit the nail on the head should be asked not to hit it at all.

The original rules apply to your bike. As you probably know, in the UK:
If the MOT has run out:
You cannot drive or park your vehicle on the road if the MOT has run out. You can be prosecuted if caught.
The only exceptions are to drive it:
* to or from somewhere to be repaired
* to a pre-arranged MOT test
My Disco’s first MOT is due on the 31st March so good news for us.
Ps. Not that I’m driving anywhere at the moment!
