New watch- Hamilton Khaki 'Murph' Interstellar.

In the heady carefree days of early 2020 when we weren't thinking of stocking up on loo rolls etc, it was my Mrs Millers special birthday, she decided she wanted a new watch! Her favourite film by far is the scifi film Interstellar, a great film, the hero of which was the mechanical watch that enabled communication across time and space by the manipulation of the seconds hand into morse code thus saving the world, Hamilton brought out a faithful recreation of the watch based on the field Khaki with some subtle changes, known as the Murph after the character in the film, it has no date, vintage lume and a nice touch although its hard to see is the word Eureka spelt out in morse along the seconds hand, the first 2500 released had the special Tesaract box you see in the photos, this is a nod to the final scenes in the film, those who have seen it will recognise it, the first run with the box is long sold out and whist you can buy the watch still, you can't get the box. Of course the wife insisted I get one with this box so the search began, I did find a few on eBay but decided to pay out a premium for a NOS one, she was delighted and so was I, its a great watch notwithstanding the film connection, she asked me to swap out the standard strap for a NATO and it looks good on it, Im hoping in time she decides its a bit big for her its 42mm I think.
Ive been a bit lazy with the photos but hope they are ok. Its only when you put them on the big screen you notice how grubby it is!

    Cheers..

There’s a lot to like about that, particularly the handset and non-date. Definitely looks better on a Nato than a leather strap. The main criticism of it seems to be the lug to lug length and how it tends to overhang all but the most substantial of wrists. If I was going to buy one, I’d want the colourful box. Never seen the movie though.

Cheers, yes, it is pretty long lug to lug.

You should see the film, its pretty good, the scientist who consulted on the film wrote a book, The Science of Interstellar, which was a nice touch.

I’ll make a point of watching the movie and may even end up reading the book you mention. There was a lot of talk about the watch and movie on WUS and that’s how it first came to my attention. Right now I’m enjoying Tom Wolfe’s “The Right Stuff”. Lots of time now for books and movies, I suppose.

My brother in law has one of these and it is a handsome watch.
It has more than a nod to the US military issued watches of WW2. (Just a lot bigger)

Hey Jase how's things?I love Hamilton watches in fact I am typing this wearing a Harrison Ford Conservation Khaki GMT a tremendous timepiece however I do love the Murph watch very cool and love the Morse code on the second hand. The Morse code also brings back bad memories of the Morse code exam when converting My Flying licence reminds Me how archaic the CAA is in this country.

Hey Jason, really like that! I still love my "Murph-grandaddy". AFAIK the Murph is the dial and hands of this watch on a 42mm Kakhi field case. But it works so well!

Hah, no idea how to post pictures anymore...

Very nice and looks good on the nato.
I also like the Hamilton Khaki Pilot Day Date that Cooper wears in the film too, can't decide which one I prefer.

Looks great, so does the box!

That is very nice, I was completely unaware of the film and the watch. It looks superb on the NATO and at 42mm, it fits the bill for me size wise. Here we go again!

I didn't realise it was such a big watch. 39mm would have been lovely

Everything about that watch is pretty much spot on apart from the size. Just wish it was a little smaller. 38-39mm would be perfect. Either way, if you’ve got the wrists for it, utterly beautifulz

I’d considered one of these but ended up with a Tudor Ranger. Lovely watches though, and I’m a big fan of Interstellar as well.

Lovely. If it was a 36mm case I'd be looking for one myself.

Not knocking the watch - it's a cracker, but I think I'd spend even more time looking at the box - must have cost a fortune to have those made-up!

It is quite something, it looks like it’s layered resin, not surface printed or anything, like you say, quite a job.

Nice looking watch and great box. I find it a bit odd that Hamilton did a movie tie-in special edition by just combining parts from two other watches. Was the 'cooper' version also just another standard watch from their line?

Yes, the Cooper was the standard Khaki Pilot day date I think.

Thanks for all the nice comments.

I think I’m going to re-watch Interstellar during this lockdown. I need to get my head round the two general consensus interpretations of the ending.
