    Baked beans: which brand?

If you had the choice, which would you choose of these?

I used to love Heinz but the taste has changed, more artificial, and I now only eat Crosse & Blackwell. Sure, I could add a bit of salt and sugar but I really can't be bothered. C&B hit the nail on the head.

Doh, I've just realised Crosse & Blackwell make the Branston beans...

Branston are the Grand Seiko of the bean world. Heinz have become the Invicta.
Just look at the prices on Beanfinder, or look at the views on Beanuseek. The serious beanists have deserted Heinz in their droves

The sauce in Heinz has lost a lot of flavour and is too thin. Shame really.

Heinz is just some weird, thin orange liquid now. Awful.

    Branston, all day long.

Yes I may have jumped the gun with my vote for Heinz as I have found the sauce disappointing also, don’t eat beans too often as I think they are very working class.

    Not much choice right now.

We’ve got Tesco (std + reduced salt), Lidl, Branston and Heinz in cupboard. I’ll compare them!

    Food-of-the-gods.

Though for "vanilla" BBs prefer Branston or Waitrose own-brand.

I was brought up with Heinz

I find if you shake them up before opening the tin, and then heat with a knob of butter in the pan they are delicious.

I have a problem with the feel and texture of beans in my mouth, fk why but had it for years. However, I like the taste of baked beans especially the juice. So I mash up my beans with a fork, the best ones for me are Sainsbury own brand or Aldi Corale. I sometimes find that a batch of beans can be a bit hard and the sauce watery. Just need a bit of extra cooking.

On that ‘mashing’ point, beans mashed with a few drops of decent truffle oil spread on two thick slices taken from a freshly baked warm sesame loaf with a few strips of crispy bacon as the second filler really hits the spot. IMHO 9/10 on the sandwich YUM scale!

Same here but I may have to try some of the other brands mentioned here.

I find a shake of cayenne and a few splashes of Lee and Perrins livens up a plateful of beans.

As an aside I have purchased a can of Branstons to do a taste test. I know it's hard to believe but yes, I actually found a tin of baked beans in a supermarket!

This thread is genuinely fascinating. I was going to be blasé and just say Heinz, game over. I was brought up on them and have never picked up another brand in my life.

But having read what’s on here I will be giving Branston a go on my next mission to the supermarket.

However, I have been, and always will be, a bean “pimper” - minimum is a knob of butter and some Worcestershire sauce. Sometimes Tabasco. Often pepper. Occasionally mustard.

So given my tinkering I wonder whether the base bean sauce is of such importance?

Any modern baked bean isn't a patch on Armour baked beans from years ago, long gone as far as I know. Branston are the best of the pretenders.

Strange how our tastes differ on food and flavour. I’d say Aldi are the vermin of beans and Branson the Grand Seiko.

Heinz have unfortunately gone down the road of Cadbury and now delivers tasteless cheap crap and trade on the past reputation of their brand name and both companies have the nerve and stupidity to wonder why their market share is heading south. It is surprising how good Branson beans are and their brown sauce is really rich and delicious as well!

Cannot believe how much Heinz have dropped quality over the past years, IMHO. Used to be you opened a can and there were those luscious beans, gazing up at me....Now when I open a can of Heinz I just see juice, the beans are maybe 2cm below the surface. And don't start me on the low sugar, low salt ones...devil's spawn.

Now it's Branston or Cross & Blackwell every time.

Baked bean sandwich, now there's a proper sarnie, with maybe some tabasco....

    Lunch time now, innit?

Always Heinz, however in the past year only Waitrose essential as they have a really thick tomato sauce with large beans and far better than any thing I have tasted.

    1) Buy a tin of beans.
    2) Pour into pan and place on hob.
    3) Add desert spoon of English mustard.
    4) Heat thoroughly.
    5) Enjoy.

No preference for me, as I always pour out the surplus sauce and add a squirt of ketchup and usually a dab of chili powder for extra zip

    No.
You should have it on the plate and spread on each piece of well buttered toast just as you put it on the fork, just before adding the beans.
    It’s illegal otherwise.

Tomatoes are the food of the devil, a plate combined with the haricot bean is like looking a painting by Hieronymus Bosch to me...

In the absence of haricot, cannellini or similar beans in the store cupboard, Mrs K has recently taken to starting with a tin of baked beans, rinsing and making her own sauce using tinned tomatoes, garlic etc. Decent enough but a lot of work when it's already a meal in a tin.
