Thread: Facebook Portal

    Facebook Portal

The isolation of my inlaws is already having a detrimental effect on the wife, and so I've started looking at better video calling options so that we can improve the quality of contact with Granny & Grandad?

Quite coincidently, I started noticing the FB portal ads appear and am thinking whether this might be the solution.

I know there's WhatsApp and FB messenger, which we use, but you're limited to your tablet screen size when using either, so the portal tv & + look interesting.

Has anyone any experience of using these products, in particular, I've read you can have multiple conversions, but cannot find anything to say whether you get to see all of those involved in these at the same time. The plan would be to get the extended family on board as well, so we can all socialise at the same time and together.

Nothing coincidental about it, don’t get me wrong I use Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn but it scares me how much data they are collecting. Maybe I’m a tin hat man but.......

The portal does look good but before investing what have you got you can use already, FaceTime is easy to use, any old iPads kicking about the house?

As long as you don't own a mobile phone, a PC or interact with anyone who owns a mobile phone or PC you will be fine. Oh and don't use the banking network or any online services. Oh and make sure you use a generator.

The truth is that the data collection is now so ubiquitous - it is irrelevant if you personally use these services or not - it makes no real difference.

You would be better off with Zoom - designed from the ground up for video conferencing and the free version will do everything you need as a family - no software to install for older people - just follow a link.

Can you elaborate please. The FB option appears to have lost traction but golden boy (brother in law) claims zoom is the best way forward and so in laws favour this now.

A vulnerability discovered in the Mac version of Zoom last year could have allowed the webcam to have been taken over by a bad person. If your Mac is up to date with patches it should be OK. Zoom don’t have a good reputation for security practice. Microsoft Teams is better but more corporate.

If you use any conferencing software its good practice to cover your camera or fold your
screen down if you aren’t using it.
