    Brabantia ground spikes

No micky taking, missus wants one like yesterday and thinks the supplied ground spikes that say they don’t need concrete will be ok?

Anyone used one and just whacked it in the ground and it’s been ok?

Whack it straight in the grass! Make sure it goes in straight and plumb! Then Try getting it out ! Spike will be staying once we move. Unless I dig it out

I assume you're talking about a whirly clothes drier and not a pedal bin?

Yep. Whack it in straight and plumb. Ain’t going anywhere mate

Use a piece of wood across the top with big hammer. Then sit back in self isolation and reflect on a job well done

    Brabantia ground spikes

Buy some quality pegs as well mate. Brabantia do some that are really good. Not cheap but work really well. Plus they are all in pretty pastel colors. I’ll find a link

Really make sure it’s straight and plumb mine a bit out and annoys me every time I use it.

You know it will happen. Whatever you do get used to the fact it will never be straight OP.

I had a patio laid in 1995 and had a Brabantia concreted in. It is still there in perfect condition.

The people who lived in our house before us had one of these. We removed it using an angle-grinder, as we both found it an eyesore.

Glad you bought a Dutch brand! We call those spikes 'grondankers' (ground anchors). It depends on the type of soil: is the anchor suited for this type of ground. Since we don't have rocks or pebbles in our soil (only sand or clay or a mixure - as a matter of fact, we don't have rocks larger than ±35mm in our soil) We always use the biggest anchor/spike. Often with added strength...

For unstable soil like our clay, I would opt for what I've done several times: dig a small deep hole (or rent a pole drill) for a piece of sewage pipe, a little longer than the spike, some premixed cement and the spike itself. Insert the sewage pipe, fill it with the mix & water (not too much of the emulsion) and insert the spike in the middle of the cement-filled sewage pipe, flush with the ground level. Make sure the spike is absolutely upright (you can't change its position when you insert the Brabantia and you discover that it's skewed. Don't underestimate the power that's on the Brabantia when there's serious wind and it's full with laundry.

As said, it depends on your garden's soil what to choose.

I did the same, thought ach it’s only a smidge off vertical it’ll be ok, oh no, once the drier is fitted the lean looks horrible, I try not to use it, wife’s job, been ok even with all the rain and ground getting like a marsh.

Got one of these IMO much better and we have the metal cover makes for a very easy and neat alternative.

The spike is huge. If you live somewhere that doesn't have the easiest ground conditions you will have to dig a slightly bigger hole and then compact when you backfill. At least with that method you can get it perfectly vertical too.

No need for concrete. It won't go anywhere, as long as the ground is properly compacted around it.

    😂 21 posts about a washing line😂

I dug a hole put a standard tube in and poured in fence post cement.

Sorry FFF, didn’t mean to offend, just thought it was funny how much we all had to say about it.

I’ve got one and not had any issues as mentioned dig it deep and it won’t be going anywhere, as regards to it being an eye sore it comes with a little red cap so when it’s not in use you can cover the hole so won’t lose it

Has mine 3 years now and it’s not missed a beat the rain cover also works well

Which is fine until, like ours, the plastic on the brabantia frame ages and fails.

At that point you discover that the current range of Brabantia washing lines all have a larger diameter pole than the ones in the 90's and won't fit in the hole.

I think it's a move from steel to aluminium.

Perhaps I should put a request for a NOS steel-poled Brabantia line in the WTB.

You should do that, based on this thread there are more of them on this forum than Seikos!
