    Whisky , Whiskey and Bourbon

Having been a bit of a Gin man. I thought I’d risk a Ferguson nose by trying out Whisky.
I’m hopeless with my tasting ability, I have no snobbery whatsoever as don’t have a clue about high end , low end apart from obvious price differences. I thought it might be an idea to do some classifications as I know WIS love to classify !
    Best bargain Whisky -
    Best Irish Whiskey
Best non Anglo Saxon / Celt
    Best Supermarket
    Best Blended
    Best Single

If it’s all been done before my apologies.
This is an extremely selfish exercise on my part as I hope to become a middle ranking expert from the weight of expert opinion argument from the forum

Best Irish, I’d got for the Redbreast range or if you want something special, Redbreast 21 or Middleton very rare. My go to is Redbreast 12 or Lustau.

Favourite bourbon is Blantons Gold edition.

The best non Anglo/Celt for me is: Nikka Coffey Malt - It's not particularly complex, it's simplicity is what makes it my favourite sipping tipple, by a long way.

Can a whisky afi assist with something?

I'm partial to Glenfarclas whisky, especially the 15.

The bottle states 'Highland single malt scotch whisky'. However, Glenfarclas is described as a 'Speyside whisky distillery'. They even state on their website "...the Grants remain committed to the vision of creating the best quality Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky, in the traditional Speyside style". https://glenfarclas.com/family/

How can it be a Highland whisky from a Speyside distillery?

Best bourbon for the money? Buffalo trace or Eagle rare for me. Both bargains.

Another vote for Redbreast - unbelievably smooth.
I am quite partial to a drop of Paddy's now and again.

For Scotch, I like peated malts but am a bit snobby about non age declared stuff.
My go-to bourbon is Bulleit or Beam.

Speyside falls within the highland boarders. I guess some specify Speyside and some Highland.

Greenspot is great, and they do some wonderful editions using barrels from different countries / alcohols to age

No blends so far I notice. I really like the Dewars White Label which also happens to be one of the best distillery tours if you’re ever near Aberfeldy.

I'm no expert and more a bourbon and Irish whiskey drinker and I'm naturally cheap so bear that in mind.

Best bargain Whisky - Lidl Ben Bracken Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Best Irish Whiskey - Redbreast Lustau was lovely. Teelings or Bushmills Black Bush as more affordable and easy to find.
Best non Anglo Saxon / Celt - Mackmyra Svensk Ek. Swedish. I'd never heard of them, but did a virtual whiskey tasting run by the distillery and really liked this one.
Best Supermarket - As above Ben Bracken Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Best Blended - Santory Toki or Monkey Shoulder. I also liked Naked Grouse more that I thought I would. I've drank plenty of Jameson, Canadian Club, J&B, etc. I like a whisk(e)y with ginger and as I have a less sweet tooth now, with soda.
Best Single - Tallisker Skye or Teeling Single Malt
Best American. I like Buffalo Trace, Wild Turkey 101 (but only in mixed drinks), Old Granddad and Overholt Rye.

Geographically Speyside is part of the Highlands but has the highest concentration of distilleries, such that it has been denominated as it’s own distinct region. This link describes it well ...

Not everyone likes the same flavours so there is obviously a subjective element but it's a classic single for a reason - Lagavulin 16 Year Old

    Best bargain Whisky - don’t bother 🤪
    Best Irish Whiskey - Redbreast
Best non Anglo Saxon / Celt - Hibiki
    Best Supermarket - Aldi
    Best Blended - JW Green
Best Single - Glendronach, particularly the 18yo which is also incredible value right now

  24. #24
Bargain - Laphroaig 10 when on sale (it's worth full retail however when on offer...)
Irish - very little experience compared to whisky however Mitchell & Son Green Spot Chateau Leoville Barton is lovely
Non Anglo/Celt - Amrut Fusion (Indian)
Supermarket - haven't tried one I could recommend
Blended - very little experience however JW Black was OK and is also available on offer from supermarkets
Single - tricky as I adore peat however I'll put another shout out for Glendronach 18, it's liquid luxury
Bourbon - very little experience and I haven't tried one that I'd spend my own money on again

I've too many bottles of whisky at home, once I've worked my way through a few of them I'd love to treat myself to a decent and well regarded Irish and a bourbon. Older Redbreast and Bushmills are two possibilities for the former and I need to educate myself on the finer points of the latter before picking one out.

That is useful, thank you. I think I need to try a Glenrothes next - fruity and tropical sounds intriguing!
