    Today I got ‘the call’......

From my new friendly local-ish dealer to say that one of the 3 watches that I put my name down for about 6 or 8 months ago has come in if I want it.

Black dial Explorer 2 like this one from the web:

It would mean selling just about all of my other watches.

I was down for either a no date Sub, a white Exp 2 or a black Exp 2, and this is the one that’s come through.

    What would you do ?

If this was your third choice and you’re not that fired up by it let it go and tell them you will wait for the sub, I doubt it will harm your standing.

I'm not sure why you put your name down for it in the 1st place if you now have to ask.

Would you rather have one of the others? If so you have to hope they will call you when they get stock on those. But I'm willing to bet they have more people (bigger spenders) waiting for the Polar or Sub.
Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.

I wouldn’t sell all my watches for a 3rd choice. But it is your choice.

  8. #8
That is way nicer than a Sub any day. And white dial is not as versatile so that one is the best of the 3 in my opinion.

I guess it would depend on if in the new climate you could sell all your others atm?

Also are you totally happy going from a collection to only the one?

Maybe With the current state of things it maybe worth passing and reevaluate later?

If you can live with the Fisher-Price looks of the hands and indices, go for it. "My First Watch".

    Alternatively, get a nice 5513.

So you put your name down on ‘ze list’ for three watches you don’t actually have the money to buy? Er... congratulations?

  12. #12
I think deep down you know the answer already. If it was right it would be on your wrist.

Even more so when there isn't a picture on the wrist of the proud new owner.

I think the moment has passed for some time for consolidating unless you are thinking of letting go something highly desirable. It's certainly not the time to be listing watches on e-bay etc unless you restrict sales to the UK only.

Will you sell your three watches easily? Probably going to be a tougher, smaller buying crowd in the current climate...

Great watch though if you’re going for it.

I’m not the OP but I was in a similar situation a couple of years back. I wanted to go from two nice watches to one really nice watch. Trouble is with the pathetic supply/demand/waitlist situation I would have sold two watches there and then to get the funds in, then been without a watch for possibly 6-24 months while ‘my AD’ assessed my worthiness.

So I decided to put my name down on the list of fiction and pay on CC when my watch turned up then flog the other two.

Needless to say I’m still waiting and bought elsewhere anyway!

Oh and for the OP: don’t buy your third choice. You’ll regret getting #1 and in these times struggle to flip the one you settled on. Ask me how I know that ;-)

What is it about ROLEX that makes people behave irrationally?

You put your name down for THREE??
Damn I put my name down for one, (BLNR) but that was a year ago and was warned not to apply for more than one or with more than one dealer. My guess is I will never get the call as I'm not important enough.
If you like it, buy it, if not let it drift.

I would wait for your first choice watch to become available. Personally I would always hanker after first choice and not be really content with my third option.
That being said the black dial EXP2 is a gorgeous watch.

I would hold off on that particular model personally.
They have never been very difficult to obtain and I imagine over the course of the next year they will be available with a healthy discount.

Something tells me a lot more people will be getting ‘the call’ in the near future, as grey market dealers run for the hills and stock magically materialises. Personally, I’d sell anything you’re selling first to make sure they actually do sell, then buy the one you most want. If you’d consider pre-owned you might find some good deals on this model too in the near future, for very fresh examples.

Having said that, I’m a fan of the Explorer II and this version has some advantages for those with large wrists - I hope you’ve actually tried one as they are no shrinking violets, for me the smaller older version is more suitable. People always go on about the white dial but many find the black dial more flexible in real life. Owners of the white dial will of course disagree violently.

Thats the pick of the three for me, having owned an example of all 3. However, its your choice, and only you can decide.

Nice watch.. all the better in person, I guess if you go in to take a look at it you will most likely buy it!

You’ve listed the watches in a certain order, does that mean in order of preference?

If it does, wait for what you really want the most.

If it doesn’t, I can say that the one offered to you is my choice of the trio, I’ve had examples of all three in one or more guises and this is my favourite. All personal preference obviously.

flies under the radar, what exactly does that mean?

I would spot that from 200m.

    Yes, from outer space!

I sold my Polar Explorer II and have a black dial variant incoming. I never got on with the white dial and always thought it looked less premium compared to my other watches for some reason?

A friend had this dilemma some yrs ago - choosing between black and white. He chose black. The white is a bit too 'white'.

Oh OP - now isn't the time to buy.

I think a few more people may unexpectedly be getting "the call" as the folk higher on the list are refusing to commit their cash at this time.

Not sure I'd be stumping up for a new Rolex at this moment, but if I personally had the choice of the black or white Explorer 2 it would be the Polar all the way.

To the comment "I've never understand why the white model seems to be more in demand", I'd venture to suggest that a lot of buyers of the Polar Explorer already own a least one black dialled watch (probably a Sub!), so the Explorer for them is a welcome departure from the norm of all-black watches.

If you’ve listed the watches in order of preference and this is therefore your 3rd choice, I’d wait until your 1st choice is available. Which, as others have already said, might be more likely now than previously.

Anyway, nearly a day on, have you decided yet?

For those who say now is not the time to buy Rolex, why not? If you can afford one at new RRP, I'd still say it's a safe place for your money.

For the OP, it doesn't sound like your heart is in this one, so I'd pass. I'd also remove your name from the other(s) that you don't actually want (or can't afford).

Finally, for what it's worth, the white Exp2 is obviously miles ahead of the ugly black Exp2. I know this for a fact, as a white Exp2 owner.

Are people still getting “the call” from ADs?

I had been expecting one but with all this going on I’d king of written it off until it’s all sorted

I can imagine a scenario when someone gets the call but they're reluctant to leave the house because of the current situation so the AD will go to the next name on the list and so on. Assuming deliveries continue of course.

I’m not sure it is, but for me it’s close to perfect. Great size case, much more suitable for me than the ceramic Sub, so easy to read with the Maxi dial and hands, and hands don’t have the gimmicky black Centers (for a supposedly floating hands look) of the black dial version.
It's just a matter of time...

Yes, I had a call Friday afternoon for a watch on my list. I have to give my decision tomorrow morning as that’s when my salesman is next in.
I’m not feeling inclined to travel to a city to pick a watch up ......
Be interesting in having a chat with AD to see what’s happening. I have a request in for another watch which is more important to me as it is an 18 birthday present for my Godson. that that one comes through

I had a right old love and hate thing going on with the 42mm Explorer when I had the polar. Still tempted now and then to try another.
