Thanks again for all the suggestions. I ordered a strap from WatchGecko that turned out to be just the job.
I'd lost the lurve for my Speedy over the last few years. But I regulated it myself recently and got it down to about +9 per day, from the 25 it had always added daily since I bought it in 2000. It's enjoying a new lease of life at the moment, and you know what - I think there's a spark of romance between us again.
Regulating a valuable watch is not for the faint-hearted amateur, but I had a go on a Seiko 5 first and that went alright. I was very careful and quit while I was ahead after two goes. But don't try it at home.
Actually if I wind it fully then leave it alone for 40+ hours, it starts to lose time a bit. After 48 or so it hasn't gained any time at all, overall. Handy.
