Thread: Grand Seiko battery change

    Grand Seiko battery change

I might finally be moving to the dark side and picking up one of the famed GS quartz (SBGX117 Diver).

How easy/expensive are GS in the UK to handle the inevitable battery change?

    Thanks, Alex.

My 9f powered SBGX061 cost £10 at the local jewellers. Pretty simple job as the battery is easy to get to. The rest of the movement is enclosed to keep dust etc out.

Mine get sent to Seiko who can also adjust the rate if needed. Pricier than the ‘local jewelers’ but I’d be more confident it’s coming back waterproof. You can either mail it, or I think they will now take them at the GS boutique in London. However mailing it works fine. I think it used to be about £60, maybe it’s a bit more now? Not a huge cost of ownership either way and it comes back in a travel case.

I changed the battery myself on my self-dater GS when I had it. I was never going to get it wet so had no concerns over re-proofing the gaskets etc. Cost me pennies even for a decent battery and as it was so easy to get to I wasn't concerned about going wrong.

Unless there's something wrong with it, not sure what added value comes from sending it to Seiko vs anywhere else.

I have been looking at the GS quartz GMTs and was wondering the same thing.

I emailed the Seiko UK service centre last June to ask about batteries and service costs. Their cost for a battery replacement and reseal was £68.40 including VAT and postage. Claimed it took about seven days including shipping.

Many thanks for all the replies. I am quite happy to pay 68 quid and get the watch water proofed with Seiko.

Why dont you simply ring a UK GS boutique and ask them for a quote?

I used Seiko's UK service centre in Maidenhead, as said in a post above it's sixty odd quid all in. Easy process and to deal with.

The OP presumably asked here first because he hoped to also get feedback from others on the service provided aswell as the cost, which has happened in the main.
