Watch serial numbers - lucky ?!

I saw a dealer recently that remembered the serial number on one of my watches. She said it’s a lucky number and worth more !

She also said some ethnicities will not buy a watch if they don’t like the serial number including the hard to find pieces.

Anyone else heard of this nonsense ?

I think it's a thing in mainly in the Far East were certain numbers carry more significance. I think it is 6, but it might be 8 - not sure.

People with a low number will always claim it's worth more - but they would, wouldn't they.

I had a number 16 which is my birth date, which was nice - still sold the Watch though.

I think if you are lucky and get a number that has significance to you then good, but probably means nothing to anyone else. Bit like personalised number plates really.

I understand some cultures consider numbers lucky but I’ve never heard of a watch being worth more or even a rare and wanted piece being declined.

It is possible that a serial number containing the number-4 would be declined if the buyer was superstitious.
    4 is unlucky / 8 is lucky

This thread reminded me of Barry Sheene.
The Manor Hotel at Donnington did not have a room no.7, so Barry asked the management to rename his room to No.25 - so the numbers would add up to 7.

4 is read shi in Japanese, signifies death so considered unlucky. 8 is indeed considered lucky, not au fait with other numbers mind

I chose number 13 (of 32) for a limited edition watch I purchased. Reason being, I was born on Friday 13th so I’ve always staked 13 as my lucky number.

Seen several new high-value Rolex watches with a surprising amount of 8s in the serial number. So no, it's not coincidence... Also the reason Omega named their inhouse movements 8500 from the start I believe.

Typically chinese and japanese buyers will stay away from number 4 as it signifies death

And conversely they like anything with 8

Once (on 2012-2013) I was in a Panerai dealer in HK that have some LEs selling for significantly more than the same watch in different showcase, apparently the expensive LEs have 168/xxxx number which is considered lucky number (brings luck/prosperity) 008 or 088 or 188 or 888 or 1188

I have a Panerai with 500/2000 serial that I got from a pre owned shop,lucky...

Did I read somewhere that white dialled watches are not favoured in Asian markets because they are unlucky?

The number symmetry is also important (apparently).

I have a watch with 3 digits a letter and then the same 3 digits. Apparently that is very lucky. I don’t feel lucky but tonight I will be buying a lottery ticket !

My 'Smiths Expedition' is serial no 002, might not have any significance regarding 'luck' but just a little special to me.

It’s not just serial numbers. It’s no coincidence that Rolex model numbers end with 8 and 38.
