I'm considering trading my full set GMT LN plus cash for a Rolex Submariner Kermit which has no box or papers. How do I know its a real one & not a frankenwatch? The owner is a work colleague of a friend.
Its not even cheap, asking price is 10k.

Pay a bit more for full box and papers...
It's just a matter of time...
You could send it to Rolex for a service estimate....
That would work - but more difficult if you are buying from a private person to get them to agree.
At different times and in different watches, I have had a link, insert, and bracelet fitted at the old Rolex service centre in London and my receipts detailed the watch.
It's just a matter of time...

You don’t..

Negatives: lose functionality, lose b+p, lose peace of mind
Positive: gain a green bezel
And you have to pay for the privilege
I’d keep the GMT LN and put my name down for a Harrods Tudor Black Bay.
For a £10k transaction, I’d expect him to evidence it is gen., and he should be thinking the same. If he’s not willing to make that effort, stuff him.
As mentioned, a service estimate from Rolex or Bill Rice or whatever.
That’s a lot of money to chance it, unless he can provide some sort of proof of purchase from an AD or whatever.
And you are not far off a full set with B&P at that price..... don’t mug yourself off at the thought of saving a grand or so.

After horologyhouse being caught selling fakes with his entire face, real name and LinkedIn all over the internet I wouldn't trust anyone. I would try and buy from Mike Wood or Miltons even if it means paying a bit more. Can you put a WTB up and see if someone trustworthy here has one?
Walk away and buy from a reputable source or trusted seller.
Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.
Beaverbrooks in Notts has 2 in the window in their pre-owned. Bit expensive TBH but not nearly as bad as £10k for a Turkish Bazaar special or whatever this may or may not be.
Preferably as above - Mike Wood, Milton, someone rock solid and value-add. Worth the few quid extra.

Green and black don’t even go very nicely together imho! Wouldn’t bother - and with fakes being amazingly realistic nowadays, coupled with the ‘friend of a friend’ scenario, I wouldn’t even consider it. And why no B&P on a watch that was always sold as a bit special’? Very odd.

OP, I posted about it recently; I'm seriously considering selling my LV. Feel free to drop me a PM
Is a Kermit the new iteration only, or are we talking 16610 LV, the original 50th Anniversary one?
There’s a 16610 LV in another Notts Jewellers for 12k, full set. Been there at least 6 months.
Big NO on £10k private sale for watch only

If you're uncomfortable enough with the seller to require authentication/verification of authenticity, I would suggest that you don't proceed.
There was a time not so long ago that you could purchase Bezels direct from Rolex freely and even they would change them for you..many genuine GMTs are not quite what they started life as.
And there remains many outlets where Bezels are still available.

Thanks!
Kermit is a crap name. Was not called that until more recently, I don’t think (last few years? Probably since “Hulk” appeared). We should drop it.
LV always sounded good to me.
And you can keep the Hulk. A watch equally as ugly and lumpy as the character. Name suits it well ;)

Personally I’d walk away as it’s not worth the risk. However if I was adamant about that particular watch, I’d find out what a service from Rolex would cost. I’d share my concerns with the seller and agree to buy it off him if he agreed to a service - I’d try and negotiate a 50/50 split. He then gets a sale, you get a fully serviced a Rolex watch with Rolex service papers which authenticates your watch.
OK thanks for the advice guys. I've decided to give this one a pass.
The main reason I like the LV is because of the maxi dial with the 5 digit case configuration. The green bezel contrasts nicely with the black dial as well. I had the chance to score one back when they where sensibly priced but I didn't.

Sensible decision, good call, provenance is so important.
