    Sofia, worth a visit?

    Good evening folks.

I'm looking for some wisdom from the forum.
I'm thinking of somewhere different for a week city break in June but not interested in going long haul.
I've just had a wee look around and came across Sofia as somewhere new for me.

Is it a decent enough city? Plenty of places to see and of course, eat and drink?

    Cheers,
    Adam.

I did some work out there a few years ago - I recall it being a nice enough city. I also worked in Llubljana, which I’d thoroughly recommend for a slightly left-field break.

Edited to add: I remember being constantly approached by incredibly beautiful hookers, all of whom claimed initially to be “in PR” before asking if they could accompany
    me to my hotel room.

My wife is from Sofia, so we go back a few times a year. The city centre is quite nice, food drink and accommodation are all very cheap by our standards. I am not sure there is enough to do to spend a whole week there but you could hire a car and visit other cities such as Plovdiv or it’s just a short flight to the Black Sea coast for some beach time.

    Sofia, worth a visit?

I went there on a stag do in 2011, my overriding memory was it was that it’s a very strange place run by the mafia

Every street corner had a dark Range Rover on the corner with a huge bloke in a skin tight black Armani V neck under a shiny silver suit jacket wearing wraparounds just standing in front of the car and the casino well that’s was something else, i have never seen so many lumps in shell suits.....safe to say we did not have a bet

Also just about every piece of metal had been stolen and sold for scrap including man hole covers and trap doors for beer cellars which made late night walking very hazardous

Oh and the strip club had a sign with a hand gun and camera crossed out suggesting you leave them in a locker before entering

On the plus side it was as cheap as chips

Its defiantly not on my must return to list

If you don’t fancy Sofia, then Belgrade might be another option, I preferred it to Sofia though I only spent a long weekend there.

I used to live in Sofia and it’s a nice enough city - but for a couple of days only as it’s not huge and there isn’t a great deal to do. Mount Vitosha is lovely which overlooks the city. Regarding the Mafia comments - just keep yourself to yourself and you’ll be absolutely fine. I’d rather walk around Sofia at 2am than London (as an example).

i should have actually added apart from the Casino which was very intimidating we never felt intimidated out and about, for the most part we were welcomed everywhere we went (We did have a weird conversation with one of the sunglassed lumps regarding our ability to pay an 8 hour long drinks bill, but he was cool in a “it’s a very good idea to ensure you can pay this bill” kind of way and another plus the women are absolutely drop dead gorgeous

    Thanks again folks.
I think I'll combine it with a trip elsewhere based on the comments.

    Cheers,
    Adam.
