Just wondering if the Coronavirus spreading across Europe will see events like this start to be cancelled. And a secondary thought would be...if it is cancelled how big a blow would it be for the industry?

Almost certainly will be cancelled. Mobile World Congress was cancelled and attracts around 100k attendees, Basel claims > 90k attendees and occupies smaller space and is broadly the same part of the world (and closer to current European outbreaks). My wife runs very large events (>20k attendees) and has cancelled one for March and is having to have serious discussions about future ones, even much much later in the year.
SIHH is ~25k attendees and is sooner than Basel - I would be surprised if they go ahead also.

Geneva watch fair cancelled due to coronavirus
ZURICH (Reuters) - The Watches & Wonders watch fair in Geneva will not take place this year given the spreading coronavirus outbreak, the Fine Watchmaking Foundation (FHH) which organises the show said on Thursday.

What do we think that means in terms of release updates? Individual press releases in the coming months? Edited to add: If it is cancelled.
It's got to be cancelled, I'm sure we'll hear either this week, or next that it's been cancelled.
The question is, do you think Rolex will just do a press release for the stuff they were going to announce at it?
If they are cancelling Rugby matches. Any mass gathering is under risk. Football matches or the Manchester GTG could be next

There's an announcement coming later today that the Geneva Motor Show is being cancelled, so on the back of that and SIHH I think it's safe to say Basel won't be happening
Its cancelled.
I guess now Rolex and Tudor will have to wait to announce their new models till my birthday.
Seems basel world Is cancelled and will be in 2021

I think that is the organisations fear, that if they do cancel this year then it could well be the last nail in the coffin for an event which was already finding it difficult to remain relevant in today’s social multi media age.
I feel they will try and put off for as long as possible in the hope the situation regards the Coronavirus eases off but I fear they are just prolonging the inevitable.
I believe it was scheduled for May this year?

Could be expected... Sad info... I am to curious to see how for example Rolex releases new models this year.
I’m sure there are lots of high powered meetings going on as we “wonder “ on how to deliver this in the wake of this global issue .
A massive corporate nightmare for many at this time , not just Rolex and others in this field who are in reality are dealing with a first world dilemma compared to some other products ...
At this time this is the reality of our hobby / passion on the global landscape of what really matters .
Having said that ... I like many others are very disappointed, & yet fully understand the position of the decision makers .
Hopefully soon we will receive a fillip which I feel we all need ... very soon .
Take care all , wash your hands thoroughly and sneeze into your elbow if you must !

Oh well, looks like I'll be keeping the Milgauss for another year!

Wonder how the roll out of new models will happen or if they will be delayed till Jan 2021 also
I wonder if Rolex will release any new models or simply update social media and website
Rolex released the original Deepsea JC outside of Basel, they will have new models, they will release them in May.
Whatever Rolex do it will be on their terms when they see fit. With all this talk of the hulk being discontinued, it wouldn’t surprise me if it was the black sub instead. Think it’s 10 years since it came out so that would make sense.
I never got round to attending. Looks like I never will..... sad face emoji

Postponing an annual event for 9 months. How does that work? Is there a Basel 2021-1 in Jan/Feb and then another 2021-2 in April??

Oh dear but makes sense I suppose. I’ve already got flights and accommodation booked so will still be going and having a look around Basel and surrounding areas as recommended by Brendan and a couple of others in another thread, I’m sure plenty to do and see.
Dan
I can’t see a delay to 2021 happening. Surely a combination of forecast sales, retooled production lines and the like will force some or all to release watches in the spring? If vendors and customers don’t get their annual fix, might parts of the market shrink? If so, would they come back?
Maybe a company like Tudor could roll along contentedly, given the continued popularity of the BB58 and other models, but those brands that had a disappointing 2019 won’t want to wait until 2021.
Whether Rolex releases another unobtainable Watch in 2020 is neither here nor there ?.

Seems like it has been cancelled along with any other events in Geneva / Switzerland. I think the other big event to be cancelled is the Geneva Motor Show.
Be very interesting to find if the exhibitors at both the motor and watch shows alternative plans work better than planned and both shows become redundant ?
The show has been struggling of late. Making it a bi-annual event might save it.
More importantly the first 2 MotoGP races have been cancelled/postponed..

Looks like some of the brand's have decided to pull together to host an alternative event called Geneva Watch Days.

I feel that have used the term “ Postponed” more as a bit of PR spin on words.
Sounds a bit better than “Cancelled” and with the pressure they were under already from numerous brands leaving after last year, they maybe felt the headline of “ Baselworld Cancelled” would not sit well for them.
After the Tudor p01 last year when everyone wanted a sub...... maybe it’s for the best this year. Having said that 2020 is the 50th anniversary of Tudor’s first chronograph - new big block panda anyone?
what date should it have been this year?
