Lange Zeitwerk for me
https://www.alange-soehne.com/en/timepieces/zeitwerk
I’m just dreaming, but IF you had fifty big ones to drop on just one watch (I don’t want to hear about buy a Casio and stash the readies in the bank), what would you buy? Just one watch and you have £50,000 to spend..
I’m off to scower the Patek pages - but what would you suggest?
Lange Zeitwerk for me

Wouldn't mind having a 5990 back in my collection.
But it seems like 50 won’t get me there in today’s market.
A Patek 5396.

Patek 5396/1R
Tough question as it’s kind of if you could only have one watch question ..... just at a particular price point. 5905p for me - list is circa £60k so it would have to be second hand ....

At that sort of money I’d be thinking Patek, something like a 5205G or 5205R which would be pure class - problem is though for that type of money and watch, is how often would you actually wear it. For 50k I’d want to wear it everyday and not as a safe queen. This would lead me to something less ‘sophisticated’ like a platinum Daytona if I could negotiate a deal. Or randomly an AP. Went into Harrods last week as I’d always wanted to try on a steel RO. Wasn’t going to happen but they let me try on a rose gold one to get an idea of the fit. Retails at 49k and was surprisingly quite stunning.
That or maybe just keep my hulk which should be worth about 50k when it’s discontinued next month :-)
If I did, I wouldn't. Would rather spend it on real life experiences instead of some wanky marketing and prices pulled out of thin air.
I wouldn't. Ive no interest in the stuff at that price point.
I would get any steel sports I liked and spend the other £40k travelling
RIAC
Ah - interesting how many various annual calendars are recommended. I guess I should have mentioned I already own a 5146J (bought many years ago @ £17) - so not really looking for another. I do wear it quite often - in rotation with others.
Please keep the ideas coming. Seeing as this is fantasy - could stretch the budget a little if the top is a limit.
maybe 5172G?

This would be a contender for me - $57.000. Pure class, with finishing to rival the very best in high end horology.

Patek 5170
But I’m not about to swap some of my current watches to achieve it, and I’d only be buying it because I couldn’t afford the 5370 that I really want ;)
It's just a matter of time...
If no requirement to be new then I’d try and find a pre-Daytona Rolex chrono, something like a black 6238.
I wouldn’t as I have agreed with my wife that spending anything over about £10k on a watch is not a good idea compared with her “suggestions” for more being spent on holidays etc..
I would spent it with family 10k a year on holidays
50k quid? Audi R8 V8 manual :D
But if a watch? I would go for some Blancpain or Lange... No patek for me :)
Moritz Grossmann Benu Enamel dial and well under budget.

I think £50k on one watch would need to have a robust degree of ebullience and whimsy to justify itself. Anything that looked like a “WIS watch”, an “investment”, or “common sense” would just be too, too dull.
So for me:
Platinum case; Grand Feu enamel dial; Chanel calibre 1 with retrograde minute indication, jumping hour window and small second counter. Boom.
My three fits around that if bought grey...IMG_0101.JPG
Vacheron Constantin Overseas Ultra thin - 7.5mm thick, white gold, £49,600.
Or the ALS Saxonia Annual Calendar in platinum, 55k euros

Patek Perpetual Calender, Gold, probably a used one at that price.
Maybe a Lange & Sohne Zeitwork for me.
Or an FP Journe

It would have to be this for me.....at pretty much 50k
The Gronefeld brothers are Dutch watchmakers who have been producing the most beautiful pieces for few years now. They rose to fame quickly and are the current darlings of the independent scene but there is real substance behind the hype (and a bit of a waitlist to get a watch).
Their back story is solid (see their website) and the pieces are technically brilliant. They are more designers than technicians but their technical work is done largely by Andreas Strehler so it doesn’t get any better. Their signature is those breathtaking peripheral stainless steel plates; quite unique and an absolute pain to make and finish. Just lovely stuff.
The watch pictured is my fave, the 8 second remontoire which comes in about £50k depending on how you configure it. Just check out the dial side spinning brake on this video.....

FP Journe Chronometre bleu for me, and then keep the difference.
Rose gold datograph, simples 👍
For that sort of money I’d have this
And I’d have £10k left over!

I'd like to say something crazy like an Urwerk 210, however should I find myself with £50k burning a whole in my pocket I imagine I would end up buying something a little less interesting like Rose Gold Royal Oak. Essentially what I'm saying is I need £100k.
An AP or a Patek.
I'd probably go for a DD40 in platinum. Possibly a platinum Daytona. I love the white gold Sub but think it might be too soft for daily wear.
I really have nothing in mind at that price point, a few around £25k so I'd probably buy 2 watches, but keeping to "the rules" I'll say Platinum Daytona although that probably busts the budget a bit.

Wanted - Damasko DC57
A Comex SD.
I don't even know what watches cost anywhere near 50K, its a ludicrous idea that only millionaires can be remotely tempted by.
Lots of good ideas here. I think at this price point, you get better 'value' with independents and some incredible movements - for my first 50k watch keep it simple as opposed to something 'complicated'. In that vein, I present my choice - Akrivia. The Contemporain is one of the finest watches I've handled -
https://watchesbysjx.com/2018/03/a-v...prototype.html
And also the AK-06 if I wanted something more avant garde -
https://quillandpad.com/2017/06/17/c...a-bound-glory/
Edit to add - £ is a bit crap, the AK-06 is around £60k, but who's counting 10k at this price point?
I can't think of any 50K watch I'd like, to be honest.
Maybe a Ressence or a high end Blancpain Fifty Fathoms would be as far as I'd want to go, even if someone else was paying (assuming of course that reselling it and spending the cash was out of the question for some reason).

Rose gold day date for me with change ! Unless I had to spend it all then platinum Daytona .

Aren’t we discussing watches you don’t already own :) but I’d be surprised if you could acquire one for 50k now!

For that money I’d want to wear it every day so it would have to robust yet smart enough for most occasions. I naturally think sports watch. Does it have to be purchased new in this scenario OP?
I was going to say something from Richard Mille but I see even a 2010 is well over budget now...
I would buy 5 Rolex Daytona 116500LN at list price, flip them all for double giving me £100k total budget
I would then travel the world looking for the perfect watch probably settling on an Apple Watch or a G-Shock

My whole collection is valued at prob £50-55k so I keep checking this thread to see if there exists a watch that I would sell everything for. I doubt it tbh as I do enjoy a rotation. More likely would be reducing to 5x10k watches.
The Zeitwork has consumed my thoughts since it entered my head earlier though. Maybe one day
