    Visit Balmoral advice

I'm wanting to take the GF on a surprise trip to Balmoral in early April.
She's a massive royalist and has always wanted to do the tour. It opens 1st April so I'm gonna get in early in the season.
Has anyone done it and got any advice?
I want to stay somewhere lovely - 4 or 5*. Presumably fly to Aberdeen?
Any other things to do while there? Special places to eat?
We'd fly March 31st and return April 3rd with one day touring Balmoral so a couple of full days to do other things.

Advice would be much appreciated for this special trip.

    Cheers,

    Toby

I haven't done Balmoral Toby but drove past it many times during the five years we lived in Deeside (Banchory). Its lovely countryside with great walks and plenty of castles. For accommodation, it would be hard to better the Marcliffe Hotel if you want something special, unless you wanted to stay further west of Aberdeen. If that's the case there are some lovely places to stay in Ballater, probably the pick of the towns on the A93 Aberdeen - Braemar Road.

Make sure you leave some time to sample some Whiskys from Lochnagar Distillery which is sited just behind Balmoral

I’ve done it but don’t know what to say. It’s a nice couple of hours to walk around and see what’s there. I was staying in Inverness and the drive from there through Cairngorms was really enjoyable.

If I’d do it again I’d fly to Inverness, stay a night or two, drive to Balmoral, lunch in Ballater, drive to Aviemore and spend one night there, do some outdoors activities.

Fly to Aberdeen for sure and I would recommend hiring a car.

For hotels, The Marcliffe at Pitfodels has already been mentioned but if you don't want to stay in Aberdeen, have a look at the Fife Arms in Braemar.
