    Anyone else collect 50p coins?

For the last few months, if I've had any out of the ordinary 50p pieces, (and £2's too), I've chucked them into a tin. Sorted them out tonight. Anyone else on here donthe same? We could start a little swap shop!

Yep, I’ve got a collection too. I generally collect any coins out of the ordinary, so have a big collection of old pound coins too, and a single £5 coin from the millennium.

I think I've got that £5 coin too.
    Also a £2 coin from 1989 - solid though, not bi-metal.

Great idea but I hardly ever have / use cash anymore

My dad went to spend a 50p at the post office once and they pointed out it was actually a limited edition silver one, so he hung on to it. Unfortunately when he passed away it just got mixed in with everything else and someone spent it!

It's only when you start looking that you realise just how many interesting designs there are.

I collected/saved £2 coins and eventually sorted them by designs according to their rarity and supposed desirability (according to the Sun, Daily Mail etc.).
I was a little disappointed (but not that surprised) to learn from a coin collector/shop that apart from the really limited number issues, they aren't worth more than their face value unless, as he suggested, I can flog them for more to silly people on eBay.

Yeah, I’ve got a couple. Is 1989 the Bill of Rights anniversary? I also have one from the 1986 Commonwealth Games, and a football one of some sort.

Both my kids collect £2 coins in Royal Mint Collectors albums - they have gathered a lot over the last couple of years, but can't seem to finish the collections.
They probably have about 7 or 8 each left to find - so I'd be up for some swapping (on their behalf)!

I collect purely what I get in change, although this has reduced hugely in the past few years with contactless. Have a lot of the Olympic 50ps and the wife spent a Kew gardens one...

I have saved them for a couple of years now I’ll have to post some pictures of the limited amount I have as I have some swaps and always up for a trade against something I don’t have

My 14 year old daughter does. Not got a Brexit one as yet.

I had 3 or 4 of the Kew gardens ones. I spent them :(

If anyone has a commonwealth games £2 from 2002 I'm missing a couple. Missing Scotland and NI from memory. I think I have England and Wales.

I've quite a few or the more common ones spare if anyone if looking for anything specific.

I save 50 and 20 pence pieces.Let the pot get to about £500 then cash in most of it and start again.
I've been doing it since the mid 80's and it's come in handy over the years.
I don't know what I'd do with a brexit coin though, certainly wouldn't save it.

Collected 50p coins for nearly 15 years, got most as pocket change but did buy a few I was missing from my collection including Piedforts.

Decided last summer that I needed to declutter and cashed in the majority of them. Had nearly £1,000 worth. Kept back a few of the rarer ones.

Found a “Paddington at St Paul’s” one in my change last week which, having a 7 year old child, made my day.

I store them, rather than collect

collect unusual 50p and £2 coins. Save normal £2 coins in a costa jar, holds about £500 when it's full. :)

I picked up a 2009 Blue Peter Olympic coin a few years (not to be confused with the identical 2011 version) back for about £8 which I thought was daylight robbery at the time

    I've still got it

I have a habit of putting them to one side like i'm starting a collection. Then when I need to go somewhere with a Car Park i pick them up and use them....

There is a mag (it'll be called Coin Collector or similar) which lists all 50p coins, number minted and value.

    £2 Coin Swap Shop

Right - I'll start the £2 coin Swap Shop off on behalf of my kids!
Here are pictures of their two collectors albums, so you can see the one's they are missing.
The albums only go up to 2015, but if anyone has some more recent I'm sure they would also love to collect them too.

Here is a picture of the £2 coins they have more than one of & can swap with anyone who needs them.

Just let me know if you can help them out with their £2 collections - so I can become their favourite parent!

    Thanks.

The difficulty with collecting the coins from circulation these days, is that (a) there aren't that's many left in circulation due to Collectors taking them out of circulation, and (b) the rise of the cashless society has resulted in much less being minted and introduced into general circulation.

The actual demand for coins issued into circulation is determined by U.K. Banks and post offices. The Royal Mint then issue coins on behalf of HM Treasury who then decide the actual amount released into the wild.
The cashless society has dramatically reduced this demand...for instance:

£2 coins- the last time anything other than the standard Britannia coin was minted and issued into general circulation was 2016. With £1 coins it was 2015 (other than the standard Nations of the Crown) and 50p coins it was 2018.

It makes it difficult to complete these collections!

As with most people it would seem, I don't actively collect them but put them to one side if I find them, haven't had one in ages but had a Paddington today.
    Cheers..

    I collect 50p coins.
    But only one type.
Don’t ask why, as I don’t know the answer.

I keep an eye out for all 50p's and £2 coins I come across. If they look collectable, I put them aside.

I also occasionally look out on eBay for uncirculated Kew Garden 50p's as you can sometimes pick them up for a decent price. Given the limited production run, there will always be demand for them.

Take a look at the pics in my earlier post.
The spaces in albums are the £2 coins that my kids don't yet have - there is also a separate pic of their swaps
    Thanks.

It always raises a smile when I get something different, but to be honest I have only been looking at the 50 pence pieces. At the moment I have in my pocket: two Paddingtons, a bit of a shield, and a hundred years of girlguiding, which I had not seen before. I wouldn't hoard them though, they will get spent and someone else can enjoy them. I have found that getting cash from the bank every week, and spending that in several transactions is often appreciated, and makes reconciling a bank statement easier each month. I am now down to half a page of transactions.

I have the most rare ones and they are not worth that much to be honest. Nice to know which ones to keep, that is all

  41. #41
I have 4, but they are only worth a coup of quid
