hey guys n gals, ok I am after a sports watch, or diver as long as it's not a dressy style I'm ok, have predominantly been looking at with the Omega SMP 300m diver, new ceramic version, and Panerai PAM1537, PAM233, PAM1321. budget is around £5800, don't mind C24 or Watchfinder, would rather stay clear of eBay, and of course being a newbie cannot access the SC, so please am I not thinking outside the box here, or do I have a very narrow focus? lol

I'd also consider having a look at the following:
JLC Polaris
IWC Ingeneuir or aquatimer
Zenith defy

The Glasshute SeaQ
The bracelet is the best quality I have seen on any watch up to £20k..

Grand Seiko also do some very nice dive watches but appreciate they are not everyone's cup of tea.
Seems a very precise amount?!
I'd say a Submariner as the sub £6K ship is sailing away at the minute.

Explorer not too dressy?
I’d be looking at adding a little bit to the budget and going for something like a pre-owned Explorer 2 216570.
Either that or go for an Omega or Breitling.
Breitling Superocean heritage. Very under budget but a lovely thing. The rose gold / black looks great but for me the blue is just right.
Otherwise play with c24 and get whatever you like. I tend to prefer more obscure brands that have a bit of character. Just do your research and enjoy the hunt.

At that money I'd be looking at a Seamaster all day long and youd have the pick of a very nice choice.
I like the Panerai's with the lock for the crown protector, that for me adds character, and the sandwich dial on some models, also like some Omega's, yes I have seen the Heritage it is a nice piece.

The new ceramic ones, even the chronograph ceramic is achievable at this price.
How about a nice Explorer, or a DJ41 - the Date-Just really is a sports watch in the same vein as a Patek 5711 or AP 15202, rather than a dress watch, and could be worn with anything.
It's just a matter of time...
Preowned Omega DSOM or GSOM or a Grey Navitimer B01.
For an older piece find a loose 14060 or 16610 and get it serviced down the line.
Tudor Pelagos or Black Bay, Seiko MM300, loads of Sinn or Damasko models all well within budget.
Andy
Wanted - Damasko DC57
I have an Omega Seamaster 300M Chronograph 2594.52 it has the registers at my preferred 3-6-9 positions it has become my go to watch and I also have a Panerai 005 that is my current favorite. I do not like the Seamaster's with skeleton hands I prefer the sword hands like mine. I would stick with a 44mm Panerai over 42mm most people prefer 44 so if you decide to move it on later an easier sell.
I will say if you could buy both, buy both, but I would buy the Panerai first the Seamaster is much easier to find than the Panerai on the resale market. The only time the Panerai model you want is for sale is when you can't afford it.
Out of the choices you listed it would be the Seamaster all day for me. Skeleton hands aren't the best in the dark but I can live with that, the rest is stunningly good for the price point.
Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.
If you look around you should still be able to pick up a non date submariner for this money, the perfect all rounder.

Yes I've seen the no date subs, ideally I'd like box and papers and I won't get that for the money

Yes lovely watches but imo I do prefer the chronograph version, the gold version is nice with rubber strap.

Might squeeze a pre owned Blancpain 50 Fathoms at that price or maybe £500 more. Can't imagine anything better in this bracket surely?
How about a Panerai 000422?
Discounted down to £5,762 plus postage on Chrono24. Job done

The new Seamaster (or 300 diver) all day for this budget - you can probably pick up a 1yo SMP for around £3500 now - don't buy new, you lose 30% immediately walking out the store... nearly-new is the way to go...
I would go for a Seamaster Pro too.
Id go 16610 submariner, explorer or explorer II. Probably exp II as it looks a bit "sportier" with the bezel and the "new" model isn't out of reach at 5.8k.
You're saying 5.8 is what you can afford, and its definitely enough to find either of those with some patience.
If you're new ish to watches, then all id really say is if you want to keep 5.8k with a view to flipping or changing at some point in the future, its wise to keep it in a Rolex.
People moan about this and say that there are plenty of other decent watches about like grand seiko, omega, Panerai etc, and they're right.
But you can buy a new seamaster / Pam and wear it for a couple of years before selling it at a huge loss, or you can buy a used Rolex, wear it for a couple of years and sell it on with minimal bank account pain.
It depends on whether you're buying one as a permanent feature or one that might be traded in future depending how far down the TZ rabbit hole you go.
My buy it cos you love it suggestion would be the Pam233 as you're already interested in it, AND its one of the iconic panerais. Plus you'd be buying used so the major hit has already been taken. Dunno if 5.8 would get you a good one though.

Verv has posted some common sense. Though a 16610 for 5.8k is possible, it'll likely need to be from Ebay or similar. Having just sold mine, 1997 full set and fresh from it's only service (non rolex) in excellent unpolished condition, I'd spent considerable time assessing values/asking prices. I got just over £6k. Whilst searching I was obviously trying to compare similar age pieces, you should be aware there are plenty of them at this age are in fairly nasty condition, I was quite shocked by just how bad some of the stuff on watchfinder and chrono24 was.
If value retention is a high priority, Rolex should probably be your choice. If that's lower down in the prio list then, as previously stated by others, your choices are almost endless.
Here's a suggestion from the 'endless' category.

Has anyone mention Breitling... My favourite luxury sports brand. Superocean is a great line...

Maybe try find an explorer 2 somewhere near budget, alternatively I’d have a breitling super ocean heritage or navitimer 01 and have some change !

Seamaster or Superocean for me.
Each to their own though.

Weirdly specific amount of money, I'd go for a Grand Seiko Spring Drive Diver or GMT

Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe:
Strangely, the cheapest unworn 43mm version in the UK is exactly £5800: https://www.chrono24.co.uk/blancpain...id11036792.htm
Don’t rule out the 16600 Sea Dweller No ugly cyclops and a proper dive watch and so much better than the Submariner in every way.
It’s a real sleeper within the range as the Herd go for the Sub...you might get lucky and find one within budget.

I love the older 44mm steel subs from Panerai. You should be able to get a very good 243 for well within budget. Get it serviced and start buying straps. IMHO the 243 is the top submersible.

Err how can I say this in a polite way:)
The point is nearly new and still in service , most watches stay relatively intact within the first 2 years unless you’ve bought one off a guy who uses it to chop wood or engage in rock climbing . Buy used and get two . No 1. Would be the Omega , Breitling , Pam , Tudor , possibly Rolex Exp 2. Watch no 2 a cheeky Seiko , Certina , Alpina , Glycine for every day stuff.
Watch purchase no2 is fraught with danger as you hold your £400-£500 purchase and struggle to detect the quality difference to your £3000-£5000 watch
Breguet Type XX.
Whoever does not know how to hit the nail on the head should be asked not to hit it at all.

Yes and no....
No because I can see your point and to be fair, I’ve bought most of my ‘high end’ watches new myself.
Yes because I’m quickly coming round to the fact that you can pick up some real bargains, then get them serviced and end up with something very, very close to new. Entirely different watch but my old and well worn, never to be sold, Speedmaster Date came back from a full service looking truly fantastic. Other people’s dinks and stories needn’t be an issue.
