Thread: What are you listening to? Podcast version.

  1. #51
Interested to see if that works. You’ll have to convert the files as apple uses AAC not MP3, not sure if you can do in iTunes?

Dipping my toes into fictional story podcasts. Marvel came up with a great idea - take a fan favourite hero, in this case Wolverine and give him a podcast. Wolverine: The Long Night is the result and it is utterly superb. Great detective story, amazing sound design and proper immersion. I highly recommend it and looking forward to cracking on with the follow up season.

The site below has some great ideas on the story theme I think Homecoming next. But will see what takes my fancy!

    Video gaming:

    The veteran gamers
    The Xone bros
    The video game podcast

    Warhammer:
    Lords and heroes
    The independent characters
    Life after the cover save

For anyone on android not sure how to listen I use the app podcast addict. Allows me to search for subjects of interest and keeps the podcasts al sorted. Also auto deletes after I have listened to save space.

Started The Apology Line by Wondery yesterday and it was so good I thought I'd resurrect this thread.

A true story about an artist in the US who created an answer machine service for people to anonymously explain things they've done and talk about how they feel about them. As you can imagine, it all gets pretty dark. As told by the artist's wife. Some of you may remember it although it was when I was a very young kid so news to me. Amazing archive audio is used and it's well put together as I find most Wondery stuff is. 2nd ep came out today. Get on it!

    Two incredibly funny podcasts,

    The Socially Distant Sports Bar
2 sports mad comedians and a journalist discuss clips, books and documentaries. In reality there's very little sports chat as they just wander off onto other topics

    Chart Music
Music journalists pick an episode of Top Of The Pops and rip it to bits
Sounds crap but it's genuinely laugh out loud funny

Some great ones mentioned here. The various classic BBC comedy podcasts seem to have expertly hit every quota other than "comedy" recently for me. I am sure the fault lies with this listener.

In the meantime, some other things I have found, not all of them comedic nor recent, but maybe interesting for some:

All Rather Mysterious - Classic mysteries of the past expertly "solved" by three detectives using the "key of fact". Hosted by John Rain of Smershpod acclaim

Needle Mythology - Pete Paphides talks about beautiful records, usually but not always with the people who made them

Backlisted - Old books re-evaluated by middle-aged publishing bores. It's worse, and better, than that sounds

Cabin Fever - What happens when three people in lockdown have nothing to say. It's an audio version of a empty pub

Clive James A Point of View - Old, sometimes contentious, but a reminder of what thoughtful radio once was.

Like most of us, James was always trying to make sense of the world. Unlike most of us, he could write well, be it about Dallas or Dante, movies or mortality. “The childish urge to understand everything doesn’t necessarily fade when the time approaches for you to do the most adult thing of all: vanish”. Ten minute episodes, worth twenty minutes of your time. Unlike most podcasts, which are the opposite.

60 Songs that Explain the 90s.

Nostalgic, interesting, and the host is very funny and sharp. I believe it’s on Spotify only.

Ugo isn't even close to that good in my opinion. Whilst I listen to it, it's my least favourite rugby offering.

Honours have to go to Ben Keyser from the French rugby podcast for me.

‘The rest is history’. Apart from music, lately, I have been listening to a lot to various podcasts that are useful for me as part of my university studies. On the website https://graduateway.com/essay-exampl...cter-analysis/ I recently read some interesting articles about literary characters and their analysis and decided to listen to literary podcasts.

I don’t think these have been mentioned: a varied list…

    Smith and Sniff.
The Grey NATO (about a lot more than just watches)
    Mark Steel’s in Town
The Skeptics Guide to the Universe
    The Rest is Politics.

You’re dead to me is fab! So entertaining and interesting. They have a BBC historian with a subject matter expert and a comedian. They discuss a topic in detail for about 45 minutes and it has never failed to impress!

If you like footy listen to BBC Sounds’’ Moment of Truth. Incredible fly-on-the-wall doc about the final 3 months of the season with the Oxford and Rotherham managers. It’s absolutely sensational.

A few from me, hopefully mostly avoiding mentioning several already covered that I listen to.

99% Invisible - design, architecture and the built environment with tangents in all directions.

Gastropod - food: the history and science behind it.

I Spy - tales from spies.

Criminal - mentioned already, but excellent. Crime stories from modern to historical.

The Allusionist - fun with words, discussion of language. The swearing episode(s) are - of course - extra amusing.

Flash Forward - imagining what the future would be like if some unlikely/impossible event occurred

War on the Rocks - security, defence and foreign policy discussions.

    A few older/fixed run productions:

    Serial
S-Town aka Shit-town, also from Serial Productions.
