What are you listening to? Podcast version.

In the theme of the TV shows/movies threads.

    I'm after some podcast recommendations.

I like true crime, true story, sport, funny. You name it.

    Some of my recent faves:
    Intrigue: Tunnel 29
    Cryptoqueen
    Dad Wrote A Porno
    Dear Joan and Jericha
    The Ratline
    Talking Fussball
Off Menu with Ed Gamble and James Acaster

    Then there are classics like
    Serial
    S-Town

So, what are you listening to?

Currently following Monster: DC Sniper, which is a true crime podcast on its third season (they've covered the Atlanta Monster and the Zodiac Killer before). It's good, albeit a bit slow and RIDDLED with ad breaks.

I'm also following SMERSH Pod, although it's on hiatus now. A guy with various comedians as guests who celebrate and/or take the piss out of various old movies. The first season it's just the Bond films, but it branches out after that.

Another favorite is Hello From The Magic Tavern, which is an improvised comedy podcast about three people playing a wizard, a shapeshifting badger and a "normal" human who's trapped in a magical fantasy realm. It's incredibly funny when it gets going, although it demands a high tolerance for silliness.

I thought there were plenty of stories much better than both really but the whole thing is hilarious with it topped off by the laughter of David and Joe.

Also funny is The Brian Gittins and Friends Show. Brian, David and Charles the robot just chatting rubbish for an hour or so....

    Interesting Things Explained Well.

He covers all sorts of topics. It’s very informative, and often very funny. Off the top of my head, some subjects include horses, background radiation, Bernie Madoff, rabies, The black hole of Calcutta, Lord Byron, and an especially good one recently added was all about Shackleton's Endurance Expedition. Can’t recommend this podcast enough!

If you like true crime, listen to They Walk Among Us. British based crime cases. Really good.
Case file is similar, but read by an Australian guy and covering true crimes around the world.
Damn Interesting is a great listen, and is usually as the title of the pod suggests, damn interesting stories.
Dan Snows History Hit is one of the best podcasts there is. I’ve lost count of the number of books I’ve bought on the strength of his interviews.

The main 3 I would listen to are:

    Peter crouch
    The greatest game (Jamie carragher)
Collecting cars (Chris Harris and others)

I’m caught up with them all now though so getting them on drip is a bit annoying. I tend to save them for a longer car journey.

The Documentary Podcast from BBC World Service - a really varied selection of topics

Plenty of recommendations here for me to try!

I've just finished Caliphate, which is an extraordinary look at ISIS from as inside as you can get if you're not signed up. I can't recommend it enough.

I should also recommend the excellent Everything Is Alive. A really charming, slightly thought-provoking, often funny pod where the host interviews an inanimate object. You've never heard anything like it. Give it a go.

  26. #26
    I’d add:

The Best thing since sliced bread?

Interesting and funny look at various health foods etc and whether there is any truth to the claims.

Bark & Jack podcast has been pretty good in the first few episodes.

    A few I enjoy regularily:

Flat & Shanks (Rugby by 2 expros)
    Adam Buxton (some great interviews)
Films to Be Buried With (a bit like Desert Islan Disks for films)
We have ways of making you talk (WW2 History with James Holland & Al Murray)
The Treehouse (Danny baker reprising his radio show, very funny)

    Crime Series:
    Dirty john
    The Shrink next Door
    The Wonderland murders
    The Drop Out

Lastly, I cover a lot of miles for work and listen to Audiobooks sometimes. I have just listened to 'First Light' by Geoffrey Wellam. He is a decorated Battle of Britain pilot. It is superbly written and the
guy narrating it is very good too. Gives you a real feeling for how it must have been to fly in a Spitfire at a very young age and into combat

    Hope you enjoy these
    John

Serial is a great crime documentary podcast, albeit pretty old now!

Another I'm into at the moment is Sawbones, again being going for ages but is a documentary on medical history... Nowhere near as dry as it sounds!

If you want something quite dark but fascinating try Caliphate. Amazing detail about Islamic State by an American journalist who follows them round Syria.

    Impossible to describe. Just listen.

Thread resurrection. I've never listened to podcasts before and would like to get into them, I'm more interested in comedy so stuff like "off menu" appeals. My question is, is there a way to download these podcasts to a computer so I can transfer them to my portable player for later? I'll not be using my phone for this. The reason for this is when I'll be listening to them I'll be offshore and will have no phone signal and very poor wifi that'll not allow downloads

Yes. Get the BBC Sounds app and it’s simple to download podcasts.

Not sure if you’ve already heard them but if you’re a comedy fan then I highly recommend -

    The Now Show
    The Unbelievable Truth
    The News Quiz
That Peter Crouch Podcast (better than you’ll think it’ll be)
Mark Watson Talks A Bit About Life

I’m sure there are dozens more but you can’t go wrong with the above.

    Enjoy.

Sorry. Didn’t read your post properly. Just seen you won’t be using a phone.

Therefore I’m not certain how easy it is to download via BBC sounds on a laptop. But if you can get the app on your laptop you should be golden.

You can use pocketcast (android) or spotify to download and listen to offline?

For comedy I really enjoy "The Jeselnik and Rosenthal Vanity Project", it's one of my absolute favourite podcasts. You may also like "Everyday decisions with Jo Firestone" (quite new, so still finding it's groove). Both are produced by Comedy Central who have a lot of content.

"That Peter Crouch Podcast" has already been mentioned, but also worth a listen even if you don't like football, it's very much comedy gold.

And "No such thing as a fish" can also be quite funny as well.

Your installation must have some pretty crappy wifi!!!

Thanks for the replies everyone. Unfortunately spotify isn't allowing me to download to my laptop, pocketcast doesn't seem to support a windows based laptop and bbc sounds app isn't available for computers and the website doesn't allow download. Forgot to mention I don't use any apple products. Seems I'm drawing a blank unless I'm missing something

Yea I’ve heard services can vary substantially. I operated mostly on drilling rigs, so tended to be better.

Crikey reminds me, been almost 4 years to the day since my last ever offshore trip!

Lucky bloke. I'm sat at home at the moment waiting on word when I'll be flying down to Brazil. The way its going I'll be here for 3 months and then have to do the same offshore for payback. The Floatel is down manning though at present due to the current situation and there are all sorts of issues getting folk in and out of country obviously. Needless to say I've spent the last 4-5 yrs looking for an out but there ain't alot of work about in the midlands for a dpo, lol.

Anyway back on track, I think I've sorted a work round for the issue. So Basically I want to download podcasts to my windows laptop so I can transfer them to my Fiio player. Done this by downloading "Bluestacks" which acts as a andriod emulator. From this I can access google play store and load pocket cast onto my laptop. I can now save the podcasts to a desired folder on my laptop, sort them and transfer later to my player.

Thanks everyone for their assistance in this first world problem

    It's easily done.
Assuming you don't use any Apple products as you don't happen to own any, rather than because you have some sort of moral reason for it, download iTunes to your laptop.
Within iTunes pick the episodes you want and download them as if you were going to listen to them on your laptop whilst offline at a later date.
Once they're downloaded, they're stored as a file on your computer like any other MP3. You just need to work out where they're being saved to. Unfortunately for you my computer is a Mac so that bit I can't help you with but once you've found the folder you can just copy them across to your MP3 player. Easy as that.

I've actually just had a look on my Mac and it seems that iTunes creates its own folder called iTunes Media which then splits your content into multiple sub folders. One of those is called Podcasts. Your downloaded episodes will be saved in there. I'd be very surprised if the PC version of iTunes doesn't do exactly the same.

    Good luck!

Thanks Tony. Many tears ago I did use iTunes on a Windows laptop but got fed up with it quite quickly. I'll take another look at this though as it sounds easier than the current flog I'm using
