Dead at 41 in a helicopter crash. One of those legends that transcended his sport. Rip

Horrendous, a friend from the US just literally posted on a WhatsApp group that all four of his daughters were on board, really hope that turns out not to be true.

Names of the others onboard not released yet. Let’s hope it wasn’t the children.

    RIP.

From the BBC News website - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-51256756

The LA County Sheriff's department said that five people died in a helicopter crash in Calabasas on Sunday, with no survivors.
It did not immediately publish any names.

They're reporting it wasn't his family on board.

Shocked at this; spent many a late night watching the NBA live feed.

    Edit. Rumors were wrong.
Rick Fox was not on board.

Been following this for over an hour, when the first notification went off I couldn't believe it, the day after LeBron passed him.

One of the most ruthless competitors and a true great.

If you followed NBA and Kobe's evolution you'll understand what a loss this is.

Just awful. What a player, such expectation he had to carry for 2 decades. A genuine legend.

A genuine legend. Terrible and shocking news.

    RIP.

Awful, awful news. I love basketball and Kobe was a genuine magician in the sport.

It’s said he was a genius at anything he turned his hand to and the fact he also won an Oscar for his short animated film a couple of years ago seems to back this up. He’d only just retired and his wife has just had another baby. And yes, tragically it seems one of his daughters has died with him.

In his last game before retiring he scored 60 points! Tragic news. RIP.

We are the same age and I grew up watching him and was always in awe of him even though he played for the Lakers. Just a phenomenal competitor and player, given his competitive spirit I feel he would have gone on to do more incredible things beyond sport.

I was a huge Lakers and Kobe fan back in the day. The duo of Shaq and Kobe was something else. I was recently watching a documentary of Shaq and of course the feuds and disputes made great theatre that transcended basketball. So sad a daughter was with him. Black Mamba, you will be missed.

Kobe had been the mentor to University of Oregon player, Sabrina Ionescu, recognized as the #1 female college player in the U.S. She learned of his death one hour before tipoff of a big game, but led her team to victory, though heartbroken.

Awful news of course to a true sporting icon. Really sad about it.

This sort of view is interesting, given a particular footnote to his non-sporting past:

Other than football, basketball is the only other sport I played or was interested in....

Kobe was a proper legend of the sport; his record and stats are phenomenal. Also turning into a great ambassador/commentator.

To have lost a daughter as well is tragic. RIP to Kobe and the other victims of the crash.
