This is a fantastic thread. I’m currently trying to decide on a big birthday watch treat for myself. I’ve got about 18 months but know some of what I’m interested in are likely to take a bit of hunting down.

In the modern world, I’m trying on a Root Beer tomorrow, just to get a feel for whether it’s the watch for me. I’m conscious that I’m now ridiculously pale due to not being supposed to go out in the sun and that gold can just not suit pale skin types. TT and Everose might be an exception? As for that AP up near the top of the thread, well that’s just amazing

I do like vintage watches though but they tend not to get much wear, simply as they are often very small indeed, even on me and my tiny 16.5cm wrist. So I’m thinking something not quite traditionally vintage, maybe ‘modern vintage’ if such a thing can exist? The 80s and 90s are absolutely ages ago now I have a soft spot for Omega and am drawn to something Speedy shaped but a bit yellowish!

One thing’s for certain though - I’ll enjoy looking! There’s some great pieces in this thread to inspire me as well as the OP

    Here are my two

One yellow gold 5146J at 39mm it is the perfect size for me and classic Calatrava styling it is ‘ageless’.

Other TT rose gold - the infamous “root-beer” often wear swapped to brown leather strap for a more subtle look:

I don't have any posh goldies with big names but have a few lower quality ones in 9ct..

I got this Rotary from a bootsale for 50p, The chap said it needed a battery, In truth the crown was spo worn that it was really hard to wind up!!

I got a crown fitted then the mainspring snapped, Back then I had a new mainspring fitted and a service for £20 It ended up costing me £35.50 in total!! Cost of the mainspring and service waqs only £5 more than just for the crown!

This Technos was a gift for a small donation to the funraiser on here!!

I bought this lovely Rodania from the sales forum on here for a very cheap £40, The mainspring gave out a few weeks later, I still haven't got round to taking it in for a new one yet!!

A couple of ladies solid gold watches that I bought the wife, She won't wear them now as her eyes aren't good enough to see the small dials now!!

There's a couple more smaller ones somewhere but I've not a clue where they are!!

I've owned a few gold vintage Omegas, still great value for money in my opinion. Best way to add a gold watch to a collection is to buy vintage.

1964 18ct Omega Constellation pie-pan, not cheap thesedays but a superb classic. Original dial and sharp case edges adds significant value.

Here's one I restored a couple of years back and sold, 1947 18ct rose gold automatic.

I was not a huge fan of gold watches but some of these are stunning.

Thanks very much. It’s a lovely thing, and being my birth year makes it more special.

^Agreed, the nicest shared in this thread so far for me, just beautiful!

    Here's my trio...

I might consolidate down to just the one later this year(the Omega which has a special meaning to me).

Interesting link to the above three, all three cases were early 70's made by Schakmans of London.

This is a different way of doing bi-colour. The case is SS, but there is a separate relatively thick layer of gold applied to the top surface of the watch, including the lugs, but not to the sides or back as you'd normally find in plated or rolled gold. You can just see the effect on the lug at 5 o-clock.

    Best Regards - Peter

I'd hate to be with you when you're on your own.

Gold- topped watches were popular in the 50s and 60s, bezels were often made of solid gold with gold capping on the lugs. The gold capping would typically be around 100 microns, which is far better than plating. The base material is stainless steel.

The one featured above spent some time with me, thought I recognised it!

Indeed it did Paul, and a superb job you did with it for me too.

So many beautiful watches on this thread! It makes me wish gold suited me, but sadly it really doesn’t.

The only one I have to offer, a gold plated Omega Seamaster, long gone:

Here’s mine. I love it. 38mm too so quite unusual for something this old. Keeps great time.

Loving this thread. Some beautiful pieces, modern and vintage. I was looking at one of those 40mm yachtmaster on oysterflex today that a couple of members have posted. It is just stunning in the flesh; definitely an underrated sleeper imo, one of the best looking modern Rolex. It was hard to resist

Thanks for all the posts...I think vintage the way to go definitely, but need to find something at the larger end of the scale....
