    A Watch for a Boy

    All...can you help?

My eldest son (coming up 14) has asked for a watch for his birthday. He has some specific requirements:
    - highly accurate
    - doesn't need winding
    - Simpler the better (a three hander, ideally no day/date)

    To which I would add:
    - decent WR
    - robust
    - less than 40mm
    - a fair bit less than £200 if possible

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I've looked at Seiko and Citizen so far. A second hand watch in good nick would be fine too.

    Cheers

Orient also make a variety of solar watches. Like the look of WV0061SE myself - nice retro-modern vibe (if a smidge over your budget).

I would have said CWC G10 but the water resistance might be an issue, they are water resistant but only the 30m
A Vostok would be good bar the winding, would an auto Vostok be acceptable?
Or lastly what size is a Citizen ‘Ray Mears’?

Apart from what has already been mentioned, I'd have a look at Timex and Bulova in that price range.

Bought my lad a mint 36mm version of Eddie's Everest on SC for my lads 16th last year.
A little over your budget but not massively.

    How about a Mondaine?

This. On sale, and in budget at the moment. For a first watch for a boy, this would be almost ideal. Solar powered, and tough as old boots!

After purchasing a TW Steel for my nephew (my Sister's idea) and him not being keen on it I am purchasing one of these for him.

I have handled it in store and it seems robust has the eco drive movement, 100m WR and a nice size at 37mm.

Take on board the suggestions of the forum by all means - that's why we go on forums!

But, after you compile a list of options - and keep it relatively simple - sit with him and choose.

    That's the most important part.

Some great ideas - many thanks. I will discuss them with him.

The Ray Mears I might get for myself anyway, that's a cracking deal.

What about this Citizen a lot less than £200, very clear dial 100m WR only a tad big at 42mm.

Wasn't there a Smiths Expedition for sale on the forum earlier today?

Out of stock - unsurprisingly at that price! Perfect for the requirement though. Thirded.

Traser, MWC, Victorinox, Scurfa, Hamilton, Tissot, Wenger, Certina (used), and Dugena can all be had at or around your budget, all make some exceptional watches.

Be cool, go digital, https://www.watches2u.com/watches/ca...martwatch.html. Updated daily by atomic and/or bluetooth. No atomic in Aus so just bluetooth for me. Bracelet is very comfortable. Bought mine from this UK supplier. Some ana and ana/digi, https://www.watches2u.com/mens-casio...ttribute_11=16. Remember to check the size - I've had a ana/digi that I have sold because they were too big.

I am in the same position for my soon to be fourteen year old except his wrists are like twigs! He would like a chronograph so the best I could find was a Festina coming in at 36mm and £76.

I'd be tempted to go for the classic Citizen BM8180. A lot of watch for not much money. 37mm, 100m WR and no battery changes.

What about a Timex? Plenty to choose from in their range including the reissues under £200

Throwing out something different but still meets his requirements.

Certina DS Caimano: currently at Jura with 40% off, so down to £177

I'd second the Boldr Venture... tough titanium watch.
    Also Divex divers...

Boldr too big but thanks for the suggestion. No digital either. Three hander wanted.

Scurfa's Diver One is only 40mm, quartz, built to survive actual commercial diving to 500m, and thanks to the quartz movement is not too thick. Good range of colours, fab straps, and only a mite over budget.

My personal favourite is MWC - I own two of their watches - and they have a wide range of military pattern field and dive watches. I especially rate the dive watches - all have sapphire crystals and ceramic bezels, and only a few are over the £200 mark, all Swiss made too. The 1000m models are too big, but most of the 300m models are 40mm excluding the crown.
