    Omega Chronograph repair

    Good Afternoon:

Bad news this week as my vintage Omega Speedmaster Mark 2 from 1969 fell off my desk and took a knock. The chronograph no longer resets at all, though all other functionality appears fine (time-keeping, chronograph running with all sub counters etc.).

Can I please have some recommendations for an Omega specialist to repair the chronograph functionality? I have used Paul (walkerwek) in the past but I believe he is in semi-retirement. I am loathe to send back to Omega with their inflated servicing prices and six month waiting time.

    Many thanks in advance. Alex.

I received my 861 speedy chronograph back in 6 weeks and at £552. It looked fantastic, came with 2 year guarantee in red pouch with some replacement bits. I deal directly so no retailer additional costs and they sent me a pack I could return it in at no cost. Very easy is best way to describe the whole experience.

I would not send back to Omega as you have said , give Paul a Pm you never know ! If not Webwatchmaker ( Brendan ) or Simon Fresse but I know hes busy as spoke to him about my Omegas before Christmas !

Does not sound too bad, as its still running hows the time keeping ? hopefully its just one of the springs on the reset lever and no further damage ! can you open it and see if anything loose ( use a tooth pick, not your fingers unless gloved ) !

When was it serviced last? If not recently then it is likely false economy to not get it done, many repairers might insist anyhow. Unfortunately the cheap options for servicing Omega chronographs are disappearing fast. Bearing in mind this is an older piece, both STS and Omega themselves may put this in the next price bracket up from their stated £475 for STS and £550 for Omega. You could be looking at circa £650+ if you go authorised. S Freese is the acknowledged expert on these but he maybe wont give much change from £450 I would guess. You could try Paul, or Christian or Olli or Duncan or Mitka for a cheaper but still quality option but I don't think you are going to get it done as cheaply as you might expect.

Too rich for my blood thesedays, parts availability is the problem and it's likely that something's broken.

I don't know the movement well enough to speculate what's wrong, frankly it's pointless to speculate, it needs to go to someone who can get whatever parts it may need and is happy working on it.

As stated earlier, it makes sense to fully strip the watch and service it properly if it hasn`t been serviced recently. Repairers don't like partial repairs for a good reason, the last guy to touch it ends up being responsible for subsequent problems.

I don`t recommend opening it up unless you know what you're looking for. Diagnosing faults can be a challenge, even more so if you haven`t got experience.

    Hi Alex,

Is it really a six month waiting time with Omega ? That is unbelievable. Restrictions on spare parts to independents is going to finish the repair industry unless they reverse this ridiculous policy. I have serviced three 861's in the last month and charge £325.00 on average, with a two to three weeks turnaround which should be the norm. I understand that JleC are even slower with up to a year backlog.
I shall be going to Switzerland later in the year to discuss this very situation and will fight hard for this absurd policy to be abandoned.
I forget to add that a small spindle held in place by a tiny spring allows the reset hammers to work when the pusher is pressed. This has probably been dislocated by the impact your watch suffered. Care needs to be taken when opening the case, otherwise the spindle may be lost.
