BBC reporting it's off. I think it'll be months before they consider restarting, maybe a 10 race season?

  2. #152
The BBC is the only one reporting the race to be cancelled though with the teams saying they'd rather not race and the FIA stating they'd go with a majority decision I think we can safely go with the inevitable.

I'd presume there will be an official statement sooner rather than later, perhaps early morning Australia time.

  3. #153
Officially called off at around 11.30pm UK time last night, the reason given for the delay between the decision being made and the announcement is being placed on legal issues around who would be responsible for calling it off.

14 McLaren personnel now in quarantine, as well.

I wonder if this will put a financial strain on the smaller teams, or even the opposite and it takes the pressure off

I guess it depends on the contracts between Liberty and the teams, they will save on parts and tyres and travel if more races are cancelled prior to actually getting there, but maybe also lose out on the TV money.
    Cheers..

I can't see it having anything other than a negative effect on all teams with those with the smallest budget and potential earnings being hit the hardest. That's part of the reason why there was a delay in formally announcing the cancellation - the financial implications are said to vary depending on how, why and who cancels it.

It's pretty much a given that Australia, as well as China, aren't going to be the only cancellations. The correct formal precedent needs to be set in order for other actions to be carried out with the minimal impact to all involved, though it would be perhaps foolish to believe that there won't be casualties asking the way. Everyone from the hotdog and merchandise stands to teams and sponsors will be affected.

Another thing worth noting is that, last I heard, was that everything else is going ahead as planned. The support races will go ahead, only F1 activities have been knocked on the head.

If the rest of the program is going ahead the F1 race might as well, if this is true it turns the whole thing into a farce

  10. #160
There is a rumour that the driver were in the plane home long before the announcement was made

  11. #161
SV and KR left early, apparently.

This may be old news now however this is the report stating that only F1 is to be cancelled.

I'm at work so difficult to keep up with exactly what's happening and what isn't... If the support races are to go ahead then there should have been some track action by now, I'd have thought.

I don't get it. They fly into a country...don't race...and fly out again. What happened in the interim?

Agreed one team identified a problem and have reacted appropriately. One can only hope that none of the others met with anybody, all discussions were by teleconference etc etc.

That said, I do have sympathy with drivers and team members who have families and children at home. It must be bad enough being away weeks at a time without leaving them in the middle of a developing pandemic. With that in mind, spare a thought for our service personnel and for those that are expected to keep the country running while others work from home. I'm thinking of public transport, shopkeepers, their personnel etc.

I can't see any races going ahead for several weeks or months. Probably they'll decide to call the whole season off by the time this is done with.

I think we will end up with a truncated season at best.

Whether or not the races will count towards World Championship this year will be up to theFIA.

Brawn says suspended not cancelled with aim to rescheudle. I can see an option being to have some double weekends in Europe e.g. Silverstone 2 weekends in a row, Hungary 2 weekends in a row and Belgium 2 weeks in a row, that replaces 3 of the 4 suspended races without the teams having to move equipment and personnel can get home between races and maybe Mexico or Brazil twice while staff are all out there for 3 weeks anyway.

  22. #172
They should do all the rounds at Suzuka, that would make F1 interesting

Best not to forget that there will be other race series booked or competing for weekends later in the year, especially for the European circuits. Then there will be the logistics...

Best to skip the Baku and Monaco F1s and replace them. Baku is even more fake than a real circuit and Monaco is like driving around on an expensive supermarket parking looking for a spot to park the car...

I rather enjoy Baku. Massive straight, the twisties around the old part of the city.

I can do without Monaco to be honest, but will miss the run into Swimming Pool Complex and the run into Casino.

I’ve just messaged Lewis on Instagram to suggest the teams have virtual races in their sims at base or home in Monaco coordinated by Sky F1 until its safe for them to start racing again 😁

It looks as though National Max Verstappen Day in the Netherlands will be postponed as well.

Talk is of races being rescheduled later in the year, and the summer break being sacrificed. Or perhaps Marbula 1 will be the only form of sport which will survive Coronavirus?

I think that 3Dbotmaker's various 1:64 scale diecast racing events will increase in popularity, here's the 1st round of the DRC - Diecast Rally Championship.

The Dutch, Spanish and Monaco GP’s have all been postponed.

That was the initial announcement, since then the Monaco GP has been scrapped completely. No surprise there really given the fact it's a street circuit with the number of weeks to prep and then tear down required for the race weekend.

I'd also guess that mooring locations are booked months, if not longer, in advance. You can't have the Monaco GP without the schmoozing.

  34. #184
I'm sure that the schmoozing will go ahead, with or without the race...

I’ve been getting my racing fix watching racing drivers stream their sim racing exploits. Lando Norris has been streaming most days. He was in an online race with Max Verstappen and a load of other drivers from GT3, GTE, Supercars, Formula 3 and Formula-E which was great fun. On Sunday, FS1 in America is live streaming a 90 minute online NASCAR race with many current NASCAR drivers using their home sim rigs. They will be using their normal NASCAR commentary team for the race.

Streams are on YouTube and Twitch. Here’s an example:

This will be awesome if it goes ahead.

A collective of UK-based Formula 1 teams, engine manufacturers and their respective technology arms is evaluating support for the manufacture of respiratory devices in response to the UK Government’s call for assistance.
The teams are working in collaboration with Formula 1, the UK Government and other organisations to establish the feasibility of the teams producing, or supporting the production of, medical devices to help in the treatment of COVID-19 patients.
All the teams have expert design, technology and production capabilities, and specialise in rapid prototyping and high value manufacturing, which is hoped can be applied to the critical needs set out by Government.
Working with Innovate UK, the High Value Manufacturing Catapult team and UCL and University College London Hospitals, the teams are evaluating a number of routes in conjunction with existing manufacturers and organisations from the aerospace and automotive sectors.
It is hoped this work, which is being rapidly progressed, will produce a tangible outcome in the next few days.

I suspect Ferrari pinned their colours to Leclerc, with Vettel playing a supporting role, which his ego would never let him accept.

I suspect this is a big factor. Also I believe ferrari weren't willing to give anything over a one year contract to him. Be interesting to see what teams think they'll be able to handle him and his ego

The ego will have taken a major slap. If he can reflect on this, and get a better control of his emotions on track, he may be quite an asset for McLaren if this is where he goes. He'll have so much to prove...

I wonder if he would have had to accept being the number 2 driver. He's not really impressed since Ricciardo joined Red Bull, which is a long time ago now...

Does he really have a big ego?

Anyway the reports Ihave read suggest he wanted 3 years taking him to 36..this was the sticking point.

What are the chances of Hamilton lining up at Ferrari one day? Would love to see it.

apparently Vettel's got solid offers from McLaren and Renault, maybe a swap for Seinz, of course the teams are going to tell the press exactly what they are up to

It's a fact that I'm not a fan of LH. Superb driver without doubt, but his whinging at times creases me.
I don't think we'll ever see him in a Ferrari because even with their huge resources, they couldn't possibly put enough toys in the pram for him to throw out.
The way the Ferrari machine works would break Lewis down into tears.

I share your view of Hamilton, and like you I don't think that he would last long at Ferrari - if he jumped ship from McLaren as he didn't like doing the media work, he wouldn't enjoy the workload at Ferrari, or the intense scrutiny of the Italian press, not known for pulling their punches. A Ferrari driver is expected to live, eat and breathe Ferrari, and learn to speak Italian.

I'd like to see Carlos Sainz alongside LeClerc next season. I think that he would be a good fit for a couple of years, before Mick Schumacher is ready for Formula 1.

I am more a Vettel fan than LH to be clear. But would still like to see LH in the red. Would be interesting. He is a great driver and seeing him win a championship for Ferrari would be something special.
