Had one as my daily watch for about 5 yrs. Fantastic watch with great legibility but for some reason, I eventually got a little bored with it. I would spend a bit more and get one on the fantastic IWC bracelet. Movement is the Val 7750 so a solid movement which is easily serviced.

Thanks for the info, I'm not a fan of bracelets, I much prefer leather straps.

I tried it on and loved it,I also prefer leather straps which I feel suit the watch.

    Had one for several years
Later ones don’t have a 7750 ( I think so check) and the subdials and date window sit nearer to the centre of the dial I feel. To me, this is not as nice as the earlier ones
Oh and the cases are made of cheese- a bit prone to picking up marks....
Try and find one with the very nice folding clasp to save wear on the strap
    Nice

I think you are correct David although the 3717 was definitely a 7750

Thats good for you as it will give you more choice. For me the superb bracelet was a big part of the appeal.

I love these & want one at some point. I prefer the bracelet over the strap but there's not much in it.

There are quite a few variants aren’t there. Ranging from
39mm to 43/44mm. The one I’m looking at is 11 years old.

I'm looking to get one of these in the next few weeks for my sons 21st. He likes the blue faced one with the brown strap. I've found one new in box for £3600 at Watches World and even cheaper in the black. Does anybody know of Watches world before I get involved with them?

I had one of these for several years and it is a stunning watch. I sold it HERE. Personally I find the IWC bracelet too fussy and put it on the Kevlar strap.

Is there a reference anywhere to the pilot chrono models?
I’m now looking at the 39mm version.

The Val 7750 - is that enhanced / modified by IWC then? In what way? (apologies if that’s a daft question, I’m genuinely curious)

I think they modify the 7750 with better finishing and maybe a different regulation system but same basic architecture
As I said earlier the newer, later larger cases watches have a different movement
Dial layout on 7750 watches at 42mm seemed to “fill the dial” better and look far nicer to my eye

I have an IWC 7750 based chrono (Ingeneiur) as well as also having a 'normal' 7750 watch in the past. I've found the IWC much nicer to wind (not that you necessarily need to) and the timing is also excellent.

I believe IWC when receiving the watch, strip it down entirely and reassemble and regulate themselves. If they actually do that or if it makes a different, lord knows. But I have no complaints.

OP - my brother has one of the IWC chronos, no complaints for him and i think the 3717 was the best layout as well. And they look great on the wrist!

    Hi,

I dont believe the new larger pilot chronos have any different movement
that the 3717 - just a bigger case.

Now the new spitfire chrono at 41mm has the new inhouse (ish) movement though
its still based I believe on the eta

    https://watchbase.com/iwc/caliber/69380

click on its base and you can see the eta 7750 is the starting point.

Also looking at the iwc website they seemed to have also bumped their prices !

    Cheers

I was interested in these for a long time as I think they look a cracking watch: the arrangement of the chrono dials, the day and date and the touch of red finishing the look off nicely.

It was when I tried one on that i realised they are 15mm thick, being used to watches in the 12mm range it seemed too chunky for me.

Instead I bougth a Mark 17 Pilots Watch, as it was more within the thicknes I prefer.

I would suggest you try one on and see what you think.

This site hasn't been updated for some years but it remains a useful reference. There is more information available on the German pages than the English, but I've provided links to both. While the reference is now a few years old there is good information on the more 'classic' IWC pilot models (before everything became a sort of version of the Big Pilot). Anyway, here you go:

    (English pages): http://fliegeruhr.ch/models.htm
    (German pages): http://fliegeruhr.ch/Modelle.htm

Note, its worth poking around the additional links on the German language pages...

    Cheers.

The 3706 was the last really good one IMO, had the IWC fettled 7750. Seem to remember reading somewhere that IWC changed some of the components to improve winding efficiency and gave it all gold finishing.

I think this review details what IWC do to the movement. (I can’t listen to it at work but I’m sure this is the right vid)

I’ve got the option of trading my Bremont Solo 43 for a IWC Pilot Chrono 371701, the only catch, no box or papers, aftermarket strap (a new top quality strap that retains the IWC pin buckle) and a German date. But I’m mighty tempted.
