Mmmmm - Not sure they're a great ad for the 'good old day' - Both died young of disease that owe a lot to smoking...

Legends both, but gone to soon...

PS Speaking as a lifelong non-smoker who's old enough to remember the time, it's hard to think of anything 'good' about the days when smoking was ubiquitous...

    I think that's Barry Sheene?
So clever my foot fell off.

Thanks, of course it is. Thought it was an F1 driver and couldn't remember the name. The pianist who died. Hang on, I'll Google it.

Both great stars of my childhood, although F1 and Hunt has always been my favourite. I'm not sure if it's true but I heard that Sheene had a hole drilled in his helmet so he could smoke right up to the beginning of a race.

I know that Hunt was often sick before his races, that photo shows him like a coiled spring, calming down with a fag. He was also a great partner to Murray Walker in the booth.

^D, you might find James Hunt's biography worth reading.

I took it on holiday years ago thinking it would be an exciting and stimulating experience but I found it very sad indeed. In a good way (if that is possible). Some salutary life lessons.

    It's well-written too.

Hunt has got Marlboro plastered all over him so he is really helping the sponsor.

When I was in the racket cigarette companies sponsored all forms of motor sport and teams, the cars often looked like giant cigarette packets.

Anyone remember the John Player Specials?
    Cheers,
    Neil.

How could anyone not? To be honest, the liveries, often Cigarette Brands, were great in those days - Silk Cut Jaguars, Rothmans Porsche, John Player Specials...

I was quite happy to see them, great looking cars, all , but they never made me want to smoke!

I'd agree, a good read - I've not read any others, but it's the Donaldson one that tends to get the nod from those who have.

The JPS Lotus livery is still my favourite.

I seem to remember that the TG boys ran it on a track recently. I'll see if I can find it. Hang on, caller.

I also remember B&H, Luck Strike, Camel, Gauloises on cars plus who can forget 555 being advertised on Colin McRae's Subaru. Marlboro actually switched from McLaren to Ferrari at one point.
