Evening all and HNY.
So my 40th birthday is about 18 months away and I’m going to buy myself a watch to mark the occasion. I’m ‘on the list’ for a Submariner (I know I know) but to be honest That’s mainly due to the timeframe I was given ties in with my birthday.
I’m looking for a bit a steer really on other alternatives that perhaps I should consider that I’ve missed or don’t know about. I’ve had a look at Panerai which appeal to me too. I’d like something that’s a statement piece but not too showy if that makes sense. Budget around £7-8k ish
Any suggestions are great fully received. Thanks

Otherwise the 42mm Panerai 1950 GMT is a cracker especially with he hobnail dial.
Can't go wrong with a current mode submariner date or non date.

What floats your boat? For mine I bought a vintage 176.007 Seamaster because it was a watch I’d lusted after ever since joining the forum and discovering it.
For your budget you’ve got a pretty broad choice. You should try to narrow it down (besides the sub). What about a vintage / semi-vintage sub..
If you are prepred to go grey could get a Blancpain Fifty Fathoms for around £8k.
Maybe one of the Speedmasters that actually are a very limited edition?

Thought about a birth year watch but I think I want something new.
I have a Tudor GMT as a daily wearer which I love, I also have a Breitling Superocean heritage and Tag Aquaracer chrono. The Tag will probably be moved on for a Speedy at some point. That give you an idea of what I like??

Yep. I turn 40 in 4 weeks, got myself a Tudor BB41 to mark the occasion but can foresee tuition fees and various other expenses ahead in the decade to come - much as I love watches I’d be putting that 8 grand in the bank and looking at value propositions to scratch whatever itch you may be suffering from.

If you're local to a grey dealer it might be worth popping in to try on the sub/sub date Vs SD43 especially if you're into larger pieces. New price is 9.3k but if you're looking 7-8k it almost fits...

I'd echo the IWC Portuguese, or the Rolex Polar Explorer II (I picked one up recently and just love it, a little different) or Omega Planet Ocean. I'd only suggest the 45mm Fifthy Fathoms if you have larger wrists.

I'm 49 this year - my 40s have been fantastic, enlightening, enjoyable and stress free. Yes there's been downs as well as ups, but life is life.
I bought a 16613 for myself for my 40th. Moved it on 6 weeks later as it felt too bling. Don't regret that. So think long and hard about what you do.
This is exactly why I’m already thinking about it, I like to consider purchases fully before committing, especially when is a significant amount of money.

I turn 40 later this year and have been putting a fair bit of thought in to a watch for myself, although at a lower budget.
My main consideration is getting it right so I won't want to move it on.

What you get is personal to you but I'd recommend buying a birth year watch before your birth year.
I've noticed some retailers bump up prices on watches at 18/21/30/40 years old, but a 39yo might be better value.
Consider something ‘timeless’ and something you can imagine you’d keep.
I suggest an Explorer 1.

All this and of course something that it just wearable almost all the time.
Nothing worse than making that decision, for all the right reasons, and the realising it just doesn't fit in with daily life i.e. under a cuff, or too much of a door handle magnet.

Don't listen to the scaremongers. Buy your watch, enjoy your watch and if you ever need your money, sell your watch!
I'd be tempted to go for an OP. None (well not too much) of the silly lists and it may age slightly more gracelfully as you inevitably become a wizened old crone 😊

Nothing will beat a Rolex for resale but if want a different look and vibe - JLC ultra thin moon
Why not buy a new sub from an AD.
Then sell it a few months later and buy a mint used Omega Seamaster 300 with the money you made selling the Sub.
That way you end up with a nice watch that has cost you nothing.
Seems a lot of us a hitting 40 this year! (1980 was a good vintage)
Buy what you like and wear it, I don’t see why a persons 40s would be any different to any other decade, both good and bad stuff happens and as long as you don’t over stretch you will make things work.
I have thought about buying a watch for this milestone, however there is not a new watch on sale currently that I am lusting over (the Navitimer reissue is nice but I would rather an original Cosmonaut)
So I think I will look at vintage, possibly an original CWC from the 80s or IWC Ocean 2000. Or I might buy an original Navitimer Cosmonaut and wrap up this watch collecting malarkey.
Ina. Similar position, I hit 40 in August this year and wanted to buy a watch, tried to make myself really want something but nothing is really making me weak at the knees yet, so far I've considered and dismissed:
* New omega 300m
* Used polar Exp II
* Tudor Pelagos
* Tudor BB 58
* 60th anniversary Speedmaster
* White face OP 39 (but sold my 39mm explorer as it just didtn sit right on my wrist)
* Black face DJ 36 on jubilee
But all feel like I'd be buying them just to buy them tbh. Maybe wait for Basel and see if anything is announced that really grabs you? That's what I planning to do :)

Rolex Explorer II 40th anniversary. Buy one early next year and you may get a pleasant surprise if it get's discontinued in 2021 for the 50th anniversary.

Also in the 40th birthday boat. I was convinced I wanted a Planet Ocean but I've been looking at pictures of the 50th anniversary moonwatch and I think I've got my heart set on it. I'd happily pay the list price but I've only seen it for sale on Chrono24 for over £10k. I'll have a quick look at the ones on your list for inspiration.

I can't see it, I'm sure they'll wait until the 50th anniversary year (2021) for the change. I suppose the whole idea is that if/when they do change you've suddenly made a ton of £ as the price of the old model always goes up. If all else fails, you've still got one of the best watches Rolex makes that folks still don't seem to be that bothered about.

The Omega SMP 300 was probably nearest. I picked them up from SC when the opportunity arose.
Another 1980 vintage here, haven’t narrowed it down to exactly what I want for later in the year yet, but current thoughts are either a 1980 Rolex GMT or a JLC Reverso Tribute Moon.
I bought a black dial 42mm Exp2 for my 40th. I didn't want a Sub and would have gone for a GMT had they not doubled in price since I bought mine in about 2007 (and sold it in about 2011 for about the same!). About two months later they brought out the BLNR and I was very annoyed, a blue/black GMT would have fitted the bill perfectly. Fortunately I'm very fond of my Exp2, even though until a month ago I'd worn it sparingly (for some reason I've started wearing it every day). I had no idea it was brought out to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Exp2.Hmm, I like this idea...I like this idea a lot....I might have to do some research into this as this could be a great 40th present to myself.

This was my 40th watch. I didn't get it for 14 months but it was worth the wait. TBF go with your own gut, as the watches I always wanted I now own, the other was a ST.

I’m 1981, and I’m considering a Reverso of some sort too. I don’t do dress watches so this will be a nice change from what could be seen as a frivolous collection of pieces I’ll continually shift over time.
