Thread: Best Albums to Listen to

    Best Albums to Listen to

Just signed up for family sharing on Spotify and looking to broaden my musical horizons a bit. My collection currently is stuck in the 1980s as that was when music was most important to me.

Thought this would be a good place to seek out some good recommendations for albums to listen to.

I’m open to all genres except glam rock, heavy metal and rap.

    Thanks in advance.

The beauty of Spotify isn't in the album's, it's in the playlists. Search some artists you like and see what popular playlists they appear on or try Spotify radio based off a song you like and if you like or dislike a song a playlist will form itself for you from that.

Thanks for the tips which I’ll follow up. But, I’m also interested classic albums as I don’t like chopping and changing all the time.

Just been listening to White Ladder (David Gray) and Jagged Little Pill which where most enjoyable.

Ive found some great songs and albums in tv shows or movies im watching and then i just find them in spotify and fall down the rabbit hole!

Composer Clint Mansell composed Requiem for a dream & the Fountain, both of which are amazing.
Johan Johannsson is also terriffic, having composed Arrival & his own album Orphee.
That somehow led to Max Richter, another amazing composer, very soothing, slightly repetitive Philip Glass feel but with a modern twist.

Then there's the old favs of Gladiator, Interstellar (both by Zimmer).

Social networks soundtrack is outstanding work music, real focus material, gets your brain in the zone, thats all Trent Reznor from NIN.
Tron Legacy is great for focus too but in a different way, its Daft Punk and it just gets your thoughts ordered and flowing.

Thats all stuff from a relatively specific vein, but very much worth listening to IMO, with good headphones.

A lot of quality music suggested. I find listening to Radio Paradise a great place to find new music. It plays some quality genres.
I take the group's name and search Tidal or Spotify and listen to their albums.

An album that caught me by surprise not being my normal genre but recommended by someone was Plan B the defamation of Strickland banks each track is like a chapter of a story really well done.

Big fan of Hans Zimmer, I was listening to Daft Punk's Tron Legacy on the walk to the pub yesterday and I agree about using the best quality headphones/sound system you can afford.

OP - I've been listening to a lot of Pomplamoose and Scary Pockets recently, a chap by the name of Jack Conte providing the link between the two. I'm not going to recommend any particular album however I will say that they do the best cover versions and mash-ups in the business, they also have some great guest vocalists and brilliant YT videos.

Go on to YT and look up Pomplamoose MMMBop, Jamiroquai/Bee Gees and, seeing as Daft Punk has already been mentioned, I Feel It Coming/The Weeknd. If you don't fall in love with Laura Mace's vocals then you must be deaf!

    The Velvet Underground featuring Nico.

Five Leaves Left - Nick Drake.

Two completely disparate albums that are classics IMO.

A twist of fate meant we ended up in Singapore instead of HK recently and found out U2 were playing so I dug out the Joshua Tree before we went - fantastic album and they were every bit as good as they were in the 80’s.

I know Bono can be a dick and The Edge is hardly what you'd call a virtuoso but The Joshua Tree has to be one of the greatest albums of all time. However, there was a poll a few years back asking which was the greatest Irish album ever and TJT had to settle for 2nd place with Loveless by My Bloody Valentine taking the (well deserved imho) honours.

    I prefer live albums.

Bowie - A reality tour; especially with this album's version of Ziggy Stardust!
Jackson Browne - Running on Empty. Not really live, but with The Load Out and Stay live recorded.
Rolling Stones in Havana - With Gimme Shelter and Midnight Rambler
    Cream - Royal Albert Hall
AC/DC - Live at River Plate (when the crowd is louder than the band, you know that it's recorded at the River Plate Stadium)

Special attention for a band too often neglected: Humble Pie. All their live albums are brilliant.
Listen to Humble Pie's live version of Honkey Tonk Women on Live At Winterland and you can understand why Mick Jagger wasn't keen on contracting Steve Marriott! Marriott was a far better singer than Jagger.

Not the Live At Winterland version, but you'll get my point...

Honestly, I didn't pay much attention to HP anymore after Steve Marriott's untimely death. My interest was reawakened after seeing the first scenes of Urban Outlaw on Vimeo. The movie about British entrepreneur Magnus Walker living in LA, now heavily involved in classic Porsches.

A few varied types not already mentioned:

DJ Yoda - The amazing adventures of DJ Yoda
    DJ Shadow - Entroducing

    Cat Power - Jukebox

Marvin Gaye - What's Going on? or Here, My Dear

Massive Attack - Blue Lines/Mezzanine (quite different from each other!)

Queens of the Stoneage - Rated R/Songs for the deaf. I'd argue Rock rather than Heavy metal myself.

    Otis Redding - Otis Blue

    Prince - Purple Rain

Prodigy - Fat of the land

    Quite partial to a good soundtrack myself - Trainspotting/Jackie Brown/Pulp Fiction/True Romance/Carlito's Way/Chef/O'Brother, where art thou?

That could be quite a long list, but one that springs to mind and should have been on my earlier post is :

The official soundtrack to Watchmen which is huge in range and very offbeat in places too so if you’re looking for variety it’s got you covered!

If you fancy a bit of really well written and played literary Americana and like to play an album all the way through here's a few:

    The Projector - Simone Felice
    Sitcom Afterlife - Frontier Ruckus
Live at Biko - Mark Kozalek
    Failer - Kathleen Edwards

    All killer, no filler....
