Agreed, enough of a change from the normal production to warrant a watch, the opening screen sets the tone quite well.

I'm recording it for Christmas Day.
Maybe a daft question but all the blurb said it's very much an adult retelling, so before I sit down with my elderly mother to watch is there any bad language?
My 9 yr old wont be watching it then. She can stick with the Patrick Stewart version if it's on. Wish he had recorded his one man version which I was privileged to see some years back.
Nice song

Really? I thought it was dire. Boring, slow and rather tedious.
Same old, same old with a few swear words thrown in to push it over the watershed...reminded me of Torchwood.
Swearing alone doesn't make something Adult, it makes it adolescent...

Couldn't agree more. I think it shows a lack of imagination of what makes something grown up.
They can make things scary and dark without the language. I thought the Jim Carey one is quite dark for kids but still family friendly.
Look at Jaws. One of the scariest films ever made and no real gore or language.
Whoever does not know how to hit the nail on the head should be asked not to hit it at all.

Yes, it was made 45 years ago, well done on regurgitating facts from Google that have no real relation on the point thst was being well made.
I also think modern movies rely too much on gore and profanity. Sure, add it if it's warranted, but not for the sake of it.
It was a good production and I'll watch the rest. I have to agree with others that the swearing wasn't necessary. LGBT wasn't on our screens 45 years so maybe the liberal Beeb will scene some in this production just for the sake of it... well we have to move on with the times don't we?
Episode 2 definitely not one for sensitive, quite a bit of swearing

If they wanted to update it, why didn't they set it in the office of some evil trader, with an overworked intern?
Plenty of scope for a modern Christmas Carol, I'd have thought.
Modernised sweariness would've made sense then, rather than seeming like a sat nav bolted to a stagecoach...
Anyway, I didn't bother tonight.

I spotted that too, the both the top and bottom lights shot right up presumably into the wall!
I enjoyed it more than i was expecting. I didn't find the swearing overly obtrusive or gratuitous.
Anyone else think Pierce is channelling 'Withnail' in his dress, look and performance..
We enjoyed it and looking forward to the next episode .
Usual BBC PC rubbish.
Sorry but a coloured wife? In 1842... I think not.
Ging daughter... where did that come from? Milkman maybe?
and would an employee really be that lippy to their employer 180+ years ago? I think not.
Oh and the usual everyone is covered in muck and poo but has fantastic 21st century teeth.
Has realism gone completely from BBC drama now?
Watched the Albert Finney version instead. Even with the mass street dancing it was more believable!
Humbug! ;-)
I'm watching my favourite version now, The Muppet Christmas Carol.
.. always found that the muppet version had vast charm and only possibly bettered by the Patrick Stewart version if you wanted adherence to the original .. be interesting to see how they wrap up two ghosts in the one episode this evening though for this years retread..

Yup another fan of the Muppet version.
Well done BBC, enjoyed each episode, slightly different interpretation and even though a little darker than the usual offerings, got across the essential message of the Dickens novel.
"Once is happenstance. Twice is coincidence. The third time it's enemy action."
'Populism, the last refuge of a Tory scoundrel'.
Now looking forward to this next week.
Dracula. BBC.

Not seen this new version yet, but I’ve always loved the Blackadder Christmas Carol.
Very good and as a popular televised story, carried its interpretation very well indeed.
