It is the circle of Watch life, discuss which Rolex, want Rolex, get on the list for a Rolex, bore others endlessly about your special relationship with your very own AD, eventually get the call, buy the Rolex, post a new incoming saying how delighted you are with it, post a review about your Rolex, list it on SC or send it to Watchfinder.

    And repeat....

    And repeat...

I like that you had a little pause for a breath three quarters of the way along that rant.

If it it were possible I’d gladly block any thread with the word Rolex in it these days.

    Good thread.

Nothing further to add, just subscribing for future Rolex updates.

When starting out on my horological journey thanks to TZ, the Sinn 156 was my first special and coveted watch. The Lemania chronos quickly followed and as my wealth increased so did my desire to own a Rolex.

Loved the history, model variety and quirky dial variants. Researching these different variants, years manufactured etc became an obsession and I loved the time spent. When I owned my first vintage GMT I was hooked on researching my next, and the chase was on.

I’ve subsequently owned some amazing Rolexes over the years but realised my passion was more in the chase and research.

When prices started to rapidly increase it was no longer the reserve of the passionate collector, it was now an asset, investment, commodity and wealth bracelet.

When the reason to own a Rolex dramatically changed, I was happy to no longer be associated with the brand.

Still love what Rolex was, just don’t like the image of ownership and perils it now sadly represents.

Did you mention a Sinn 156?

Did the reason change? For whom?
Every coveted luxury item attracts a few of those but they don’t define that item.

Boxed with papers, hang tags and stickers? Presume it's had a quiet life and is a safe queen?

I just don’t like the image of what owning a Rolex is all about these days.

I may be wrong, but for most people in the “real” world, owning a Rolex isn’t about the watch anymore, it’s the brand and status.

Doubt many Rolex owners know much about the history, models, transitional dials etc or even care if truth be told. Only interested in the kudos and value.

As for the crazy prices, I’ll leave that to the investors, profit makers and fools.

Which is the reason I don't fancy buying one any more.

Always scary to read of these experiences, which qualify the frequent affirmations that RSC will always honour 'do not polish / change' etc instructions. Perhaps they have got better in this regard?

I thought this was a thread about Rolex, that’s not supposed to be about Rolex, but really is about Rolex?

Here's a novel idea. Buy a Rolex, or two, keep and wear them?!

    Sorry, I'll get my coat.

I wonder about the effect of watch forums. The continuous repetitive closed circuit (sponsored?) chatter and occasional self induced frenzy.
I wonder if I have come to enjoy watches more or less by following a watch forum.
I wonder too if you might feel differently about your Rolex if left in quiet enjoyment of them, oblivious to the machinations of others.
