Special weekend - Vacheron and Rolex

Went out last weekend eyeing up the next big addition to the collection, to mark a recent change in jobs and a birthday, went for a wander around the financial sinkhole that is the Argyle Arcade in Glasgow, only to discover that the new flagship Chisholm Hunter boutique was now stocking Vacheron Constantin, happy days.

Fancied an Overseas with the Brown dial only to be told that this had been discontinued but that they had a Blue 4500 in the window...why not I thought, but I’m not going to buy it as I already have a AP Royal Oak Chrono with the blue dial and it won’t be as head turning. I had read the phenomenal review by MartynJC and that had triggered the desire to go and investigate but no way was I going for another blue faced leg of the holy trinity........please see the pictures of the VC below, absolutely stunning watch and the dial is something else, it’s like a dark blue sapphire on a watch dial. Reserved last weekend, went in to pick it up yesterday:

On the walk through the Arcade I’m passing by Laings, which has a couple of bi-metal Skydwellers (including a black dial, which was lovely) and I noticed a Rolex Milgauss 116400 GV Z Blue, don’t see them in the window often so picked that up as well as don’t have a Rolex in the collection (would’ve had a DJ41 from SC but couldn’t get to London this side of Christmas). Love the dial, the sapphire is really cool and the seconds hand gives it some character, love it!

A cracking way to set up a birthday weekend, will need to do a refresh of the STOC in the new year, 2019 has been unbelievable! Now just a PP in 2020, probably on the dressier end of the models and I will be a happy man.

Two great watches and great dials.

Have you tried the VC on the rubber yet? It completely changes the dynamics of the watch.

Nice double pick-up! Was your other half there or did you surprise them with the news when you got home?

Happy birthday and enjoy the new job.

Yes, it looks amazing, the crocodile strap is also great for transforming it into an evening watch...got better light as well, so you can see the burst from the blue

She was there...the Christmas present has entered a new price bracket and involves diamonds! To be fair, when I got the AP, she went all in on a ring, so it won’t be that bad this time!

I would love an Aquanaut, but despite having a reasonable profile for a customer in a PP AD, I’m getting no love!

Therefore the next in line which will be easier to get hold of (I think) would be the 5524G, that would complete the set and I would calm down for a while...albeit I’m still keen on adding some other brands, including IWC, Panerai and JLC

Suspect I may need to sell a few next year, at the moment I don’t flip, I have kept everything I have bought but some are not getting any wear

Well done Peterdo!! It is certainly a blue like no other!

I always like to help a fellow TZr in choices! You picked up a couple of crackers! As regards PP I can recommend the Calatrava (I have an Annual Calendar - but lust after a Perpetual).

    Happy Birthday.

Thanks Martyn, I saw it in the window and didn’t think much of it other than to try it in and buy a brown dial, even if pre-owned, saw the dial and took it there and then...they don’t appear to be that easy to source in the UK so delighted to walk away with it, the Milgauss was a brucey bonus!

The PP will be the considered purchase. Now that I gave two sports models, I want to get something properly special, as I have a big birthday in 2 years, so may even hang in and save up for the perpetual!

Thanks again for sharing your thoughts and knowledge, Chisholm Hunter should be sending you a commission

Congratulations on the watches especially the VC. I really like this piece. What size wrist do toy have and how does it wear?

    Cheers

Ha ha, it’s been a good year work wise!

I have a 7.5 inch wrist and have a couple of spare links, plenty of space on the rubber and leather straps as well.

It wears really well, much more comfortable than my AP, the integrated bracelet and straps help the dimensions

You won't forget that weekend in a hurry! Happy birthday and enjoy. Martyn's review of the VC has a few of us weighing it up, especially with the micro adjustment on the bracelet. Milguass isn't bad either!

    Nice work
I saw the Milgauss at Laings on Thursday and thought about trying it on but remember trying one on previous and finding it wore slightly too big on me so left it.
Both look great in the pics.

That's interesting, it's not often you hear of an RRP reduction (Patek did a 10% reduction several years ago, which didn't go down well).

Snap - I found the Milgauss case too big too (when I bought the new Air King on release and ended up returning it). Funny, as my new Explorer 2 case (which you'd expect to be bigger) is much more comfortable. I guess shape (H x W) also plays a part.

I think the Milgauss is heavy due to the inner anti magnetic case which the Air King also gets. It makes the watch top heavy.

Yeah, it’s a chunk of metal, but I like a heavy watch, I have the Grand Seiko SBGJ227 as a daily and despite its looks, it actually has some heft...albeit nothing on the AP RO, it’s a different beast
