Merc sl. R129 series from 1994 to 2000

Anyone own or have owned one of these sl ?
I’ve been looking at them really like the classic styling.
Any pitfalls to look out for when buying
I’m interested in the sl 320
    Cheers Andy

I have had 2 but for the life of me can’t remember what year they were but they were both excellent. Only problem I had in 9 years was a bit of corrosion near the front bumper and an O2 sensor failed. I wouldn’t class them as fast but they have enough power to put a smile on your face. Get a well looked after one and you shouldn’t have any complaints.

You may have already seen this....

I used to sell these new back in the day. The replacement R230 never quite had the same appeal.

Make sure the hood works and that the electrics in the passenger foot well are all good with no damp or water damage, they can affect the roof operation and thats expensive, avoid the sl300-24 as the fuel heads can be a bother and go for the straight 6 rather than the later v6. Either that or forget the 129 and get the 107. It rusts but its a lot cooler.

Over the years I’ve probably had at least 20 129’s & still currently have 7 of them.
Having read the Pistonheads guide, it is quite thorough & detailed.
A few things I’ve noticed over the years to look out for -

Roof control modules, these are about £550 to have repaired if they fail, I’ve just had one done but it isn’t a common occurrence.
Hardtop roof edges are prone to paint blisters due to not being stored carefully.
A replacement MB soft top is about £800 but perspex windows can be replaced by specialists much cheaper.
Drivers seat bolsters on later cars aren’t as hard wearing. The leather on the seats is thinner on later cars compared to the first 129’s.
Parts are still easily available from Mercedes or 3rd parties.
Buy the best one you can, there are some cheap ones for sale & are cheap for a reason.

My personal preference is for a late model 320, as I find them a better drive than a 500.

Happy to answer any questions you have, if I can.
