    Cycling accessories,lights,bells,helmets etc.

my first bike in decades arrives next week, I didn't realise how much everything has moved on, I mean hydraulic disc brake WTF.

I may have jumped the gun buying some bits so please give me advice/reccomendations.

I wont be wearing any lycra.

What I have ordered so far all from Halfords and can probably change

    1,helmet bell charger

2,light F bikehut 200 lumens, is that enough?

    3,light R bikehutt 50 lumens

concerned about being seen and run times

    4,halfords rack

5,lock Kryptonite evolution supposed to cover me for theft

    6,Halfords mountian bike mudguards

the bell is puny, should I buy a mirror or is that a no,no?

I have a mirror on all of my bikes, find them indispensable. These days LED bike lights are improbably bright and run for weeks. For lighting up the road in front of you, you want something like a good LED torch and mount. For being seen, a little lightweight flashy blinker should do fine at both ends.

This is my favourite mirror: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B011DLUBIK

It plugs into a bar end, tightened by an allen key. Should work with flat bars as well as regular road bike bars.

    Strong and stable.

I don't bother with a mirror, but I do like to have two rear lights, one flashing and one steady. You might want to think about a hi viz jacket, and warm/weatherproof clothing at this time of year!

I see you got a mountain bike - are you planning to go off-road?

I think most of the bits are OK. Helmet - just make sure its light and comfortable (and within budget). I prefer moon lights but they cost more.

I am not sure your bike can take a rack. If it can you don't need the rear mudguard as the rack will act as one and will be similar to a mountain bike mudguard.

Halfords do a tortec rack for £14, which I probably what I would get.

Spurcycle bell. I have a cheaper copy, but can’t remember where I got it from. The ding goes on for ages and really cuts through the background noise.

Alternatively look at the Dutch ding dong bells, not small, but an unusual sound, which seems to awaken the dozy pedestrians.

I always buy CatEye lights, preferring batteries to the disposable USB lights.

I always swap out my saddles for a Rivet Pearl.

What sort of riding will you be doing? Leisure/fitness, city and utility, commuting?

I'd recommend SKS bluemels mudguards or Tortec ones, as long as possible, preferably also with mud flaps. Must have safety release clips on the front.

I like the Lion Bellworks bells. Not cheap but made in the Birmingham.

If you will be doing a lot of commuting on it or regularly riding in the morning or evening on it then I'd highly recommend considering a hub dynamo and lights. You can buy a dynamo wheel for about £30 from decathlon now. So convenient to be able to just go without messing about with chargers and batteries. Spanninga elips and axendo lights are great.

Whatever lights you buy, try to get a front light with horizontal cutoff, so that the light is directed onto the road where you need it and other road users are not blinded by it.

I also have the cateye bm-45 mirror linked to by monogroover above, an excellent piece of kit.

Thanks for the ideas,so many choices its bewildering.
I will choose lights, helmet, bell, etc. when I feel I know more about the subject and the sales start.

I picked the bike up yesterday and managed 4 miles and at one stage 17mph downhill, it looks much nicer than the photos.
I dont ache that much, Its going to help me get a bit fitter.

20 years off a bike and I have the bug already, disc brakes, suspension I had no idea of the advancements.

it looks much better than in the photos.

    Well done.

Listen to your body, and increase the mileage gradually.

A green ‘Cycle Proficiency pennant’ required perhaps?
