Thread: What are you getting the other half for Xmas?

  1. #1

What are you getting the other half for Xmas?

I debated putting this in the Bear Pit but I'm actually after serious inspiration so thought best to go in G&D to avoid the cruder offerings!

Having just ordered an engagement ring at vast expense (planning that for some time in March) I'm looking for good gift ideas that won't break the bank but won't leave me looking cheap either! I don't want her thinking I've gone tight or not bothered!

I'm amazed how may people seem to agree to buy their own presents and then effectively just exchange cash with their spouse.

    What's the point in that?

Might as well just do a token present otherwise it just becomes about money?

Diner for two in a starred restaurant. This way you both get to enjoy it. Alternatively, a show on the West end.
The important idea being that it’s something for you both, not just her.

This, or a spa break for the two of you.

It's my birthday in mid Jan so instead of presents we are putting money towards a 4 day ski weekend in Flaine.

The wife struggles with self confidence and has issues about how she dresses so I've booked her a session with a personal shopper.
The wife is paying for my train and coach tickets so that I can go and volunteer with Crisis.

Nothing I'm afraid. We stopped buying presents a long time ago.

I've made a small (anonymous) donation to a local charity who make Christmas dinners in the leisure centre for those on their own on Christmas Day.

That's as far as the present buying has gone, save a few small things for the kids.

She’s always moaning about my work clothes drying on the radiator and steaming up the windows so I’ve bought her a dehumidifier for Christmas

The hairdryer lol I’m not that brave, we seldom buy presents for each other as we have what we need but it was an impulse buy whilst I was trying yet more coats on in John Lewis lol

We just tend to ask each other now, but usually end up with a weekend or two away so we can both get the benefit. Plus, you can book something you know you will enjoy.
I then make a small parcel of nik nails , perfume, body oil , candles etc .
    These are for me, obviously.

    SWMBO is getting.

    1) Sheepskin Karu Slippers (made in South Africa) - they really are the business.

    2) Arctic 2 Muck Boots - abit of a theme here - cold feet.

    3) An original UK 1961 Quad poster for the Guns of Navarone. Long story.

    4) My love

We buy each other presents for a maximum for £20 which makes it more fun than just spunking hundreds on gifts for each other.

A mulberry handbag she would never get herself. It's a lot more than we ever spend on each other, but we're considering another kid so might be the only time for the next 20 years I can treat her to something so nice. I also owe her for decades of terrible terrible presents.

That is cool. Also where are you getting the Karu slippers from? I've looked online and can't seem to find a Uk stockist.

This year the wife is getting a new samsung tablet, bottle of prefume and a picture I commissioned of our old dog. So happy for the first two and sad for the last one. Its a struggle for me as xmas, her birthday and wedding anniversary are within a few months of each other. I tend to spoil her but I'm trying to wind it back a little as I'm hoping that I may get a new job soon that will be lower pay but hopefully offer a lot more stability over the coming years than my present gig. As for me I want nothing

apart from a new subwoofer, gin, some new tools, garage door, new TV........

One thing will be a key finder which consists of 6 discs with button batteries linked to a small control so you can find something that she’s lost when it bleeps. Saves endless ‘I can’t find my...’.

Isn't it though? No sign of cryoturbation, so at a guess Bagshot Sands underneath. Assuming it's UK...

Likely to be layer of Plateau Gravels if it was.

My wife will be the lucky recipient of a new pair of gloves (leather, warm, not rubber, washing-up - lazy cow has no idea what that is!).

To be fair, she's already had her Xmas present - BBR GTI Super 220 tuning package for her MX-5.

Well sort of, she's getting one of those lookalike weighted vests for training.

The topsoil was brought in when the houses were built, the area used to be a sand quarry. About 60 miles from the sea!

The sand is incredibly compacted, so much so that drainage is very slow!

    Here's the finished pond 10' x 7' x 2' deep

I proposed a "no gift giving" year for us but she had already bought some stuff for me. As she NEVER had liked my gift buying I got her to send me links to things she may like. Amazon is my friend here.

All white air max Thea's for poncing around London in

Plus tickets to the nutcracker ballet between Xmas an new year, possibly with ice skating etc as well.

Normally I like to get her quite a few things but she is putting her foot down.
Hopefully my disappointment at a rather reduced haul won't be too apparent. We don't have kids so generally like to spoil each other.

Buy it from John Lewis or somewhere else that's good at taking returns. I bought one for the other half last year (even though she already had the Dyson hairdryer) and the filter has clogged twice and unless you've got an airline to clear it out it'll limit the performance. So she's now on her third one...
