Music to get you to sleep

Are there any TZ'ers who struggle to sleep & listen to music to help get some zzs? I have been on a cocktail of drugs (NHS ones) and it seems to be a side effect that I struggle to stay alseep.

I often wake at 1 or 2am & am awake for hours so I have started putting the headphones on & listening to music which does help. My favourite "send me to sleep" album is Dark Side of The Moon that I think is best listened to in a dark room anyway.

Does anyone else have a favourite El Pee of soothing music to assist snoozing?

Good album but night nurse does the trick,, for the first 2 nights anyway. Other than that just leave the TV on low.

I leave a radio on LBC which seems to work.

Music never really works for me when you can notice songs ending and beginning. Talk radio is good as it's a constant.

I have it on very quiet so I can't fully make out what they're saying.

I suffer with insomnia every now and again; I can always get to sleep initially but wake up and can't get back to sleep. I almost always listen to an album called Victorialand by the Cocteau Twins at a very low volume - extremely relaxing.

Slightly OT, but many who experience ASMR find it so relaxing and calming that they will fall a sleep whilst experiencing it. Plenty of videos on Youtube, you might just find that you have a trigger. Worth a go.

You need Max Richter - From Sleep. Works for me.

Strange as it seems, I actually like listening to something loud on my headphones when preparing for sleep. Eminem is a favorite. When it has finished then the silence after the storm helps me to switch off. Everyone is different!

The Orbs Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld is another one in the same vein, spent many a sleepy night nodding off to both.

I tune into https://www.sleepradio.co.nz/ on my internet radio. The music works! You can find it on Tunein, https://tunein.com/radio/SLEEP-RADIO-s228215/. The stream starts with a brief advert but that's the only one, after that you just hear sleep inducing music.

I used to listen to Jean Michelle Jarre - Oxygene when I couldn’t sleep.
There is also a Dire Straits album - Telegraph Road I think - that has a lot of rain sounds and I found this helped too, though I’ve always found the sound of rain soothing.

Just make a loop of Small Hours by John Martyn.
Here’s an explanation from the web...
“It was recorded at Woolwich Green Farm in Theale, Berkshire, which was owned by Chris Blackwell, using the Island records mobile studio. The majority of the recording was done at night as it included outside microphones trying to develop an external ambience and to prevent traffic etc disturbing the recording by day.

On the album, Small Hours was recorded at 3.00am in the morning at the edge of the lake next to the farm and captures the sound of the water lapping as well as the geese on the lake. Including Steve Winwood, it is a very moving piece with John's use of the echoplex giving the music a truly ethereal feel as the slow notes seemingly hang over the lake. Truly magical!”

Far cry 5 soundtrack by Hammock.

I'm a terrible sleeper, but this version of the soundtrack really works for me.

    Two podcasts i alternate between:

    sleep whispers:
This is a chap called Harris who does a podcast through whispering. he does things like read a wiki article, read a chapter from a book, answer listener questions. Its very relaxing, he has a very pleasant way about him and i have found it excellent for getting to sleep.

    Sleepy:
Podcast where a chap called Otis Grey reads for about an hour from the start of various classic books. He has a very rich yet quite monotone voice that is brilliantly relaxing.

If i dont want to hear someone talking, i listen to light rain or lapping water.

All podcasts and rain/water sounds are on spotify, and the podcasts are available on other podcast platforms.

Shipping Forecast wins every time for me https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00...pisodes/player The tone is completely soporific.

I’ve got to be honest though. My experience comes from back in the day when you had to be sleep deprived enough to still be awake to hear it.

No podcasts back then! Which was probably only about 8 years ago 😉

‘Simple Habit’ and ‘Headspace’ app have some great free meditations.

I also found ‘rainy sounds’ playlists on Spotify worked. I found the same song or songs on repeat helped, some Hot Chip or a couple of songs from the Smashing Pumpkins- Adore album worked for me.

Failing that, night nurse or Zopiclone (prescription) works a treat!

Keen to hear other suggestions to battle insomnia on this thread :)

Don't fight it, it will only annoy you and make it worse. If you're not falling asleep try some of the suggested songs or podcasts for 30 mins. If it's not working try reading for 15 mins. Still wide awake, get up and do some light housework, wash a few dishes or sweep the floor.

insomnia is usually down to worry, key is to quiet the mind by either just letting the audio stuff just block it our, or by light focus on another task, I.e. Reading, light housework.

Lying staring at the ceiling is the worst thing to try.

Well, it was me that mentioned Victorialand. However, I have no idea what is meant by your statement above.

Normally, something like Rick Wakeman's Grand Piano Tour works for me. Lilting and relaxing.

However, since my knee replacement surgery I've really struggled to sleep; so I listen the the Hitch-hikers Guide To The Galaxy, (I have all 28 episodes), on the basis that if it doesn't help me sleep then at least it's entertaining and funny to listen to.
    Best Regards - Peter

I'd hate to be with you when you're on your own.

I found some long lasting tracks of rainfall, the sea washing up on a beach and bird song in trees, played quietly and on repeat, helped me to get to sleep. Very soothing indeed.

I have found through experience the most important thing to do if you wake in the middle of the night - don’t look at the time.

As soon as your brain knows, it starts whirring into action, then it’s mad thoughts from there on.

Try Nick Drake Pink Moon. Very chilled but I always find myself trying to work out his open tuning, although it's mostly D.

Thanks some good advice there. I’ve read various books about insomnia but sometimes the simplest stuff works the best.

This works for me, tinnitus means I need noise to drown out the noise, and rain sounds on my echo dot works perfectly at night.

“Calm” app has a lot of meditations, deep sleep body scans, bedtime “stories” read by the likes of Mathew McConnaughey (CBA to look up the right spelling if that’s not right) and also ambient tracks like rainfall, forest etc.

I initially used it for meditation but liked it enough to but a subscription after trying headspace and others.
